“What other choices do we have?” Ere went on, as if she wasn’t painfully short of breath. As if she wasn’t seized by nauseating panic at the thought of losing Kai.

For, either way, Valhalla or returning to his own realm, Eir was doomed to lose Kai.

Ere confirmed this with his next words.

“We can’t stay here, in this realm, even if we do survive the Frost Giant. Which I, for one, fully intend to do. We don’t have a say in when and how we get whisked back to our own world. Although…”

He tapped his chin in thought.

“We’ve broken the rules before. Perhaps there is a way for you to come to our time, or for Kai to remain here with you.”

“He cannot stay,” she immediately refuted.

“Odin will have him one way or the other. The Norns have dictated this Fate. If he is to live, he must leave this world and never come back.”

Ere stared at her with determined intensity at that.

“Then you must come with us to our world. I will find a way to break Kai out of the Celestial prison…I always think of something…”

“Is it that easy?” she asked doubtfully.

And yet, fearful with hope.

He frowned.

“No. It’s supposed to be against the rules. It would tear the fabric of the universe or some such. Distort the Universal Balance. And I don’t have anything to bargain with this time, since I will most certainly return empty handed. But…”

He looked at her directly.

“You could wish for it. Wish to be with Kai forever. Isn’t that what you want?”

Ah, gods!

It was the only thing on Eir’s mind and heart these days.

Being with Kai. Always.

She dared not hope for it. She dared not reach for it.

But she dreamed when she slept in his arms.

Dreamed of hearing his deep-chested laughter and seeing his eyes crinkle in that perfect Kai-smile.

Dreamed of him playing amongst younglings like a great big child himself. So innocent and pure. Protective and loving.

She dreamed of waking up to him every morning, their bodies still joined. Deliciously sore and replete from their nightly lovemaking.

Perhaps she’d have him again before they parted ways for the day. Perhaps he’d gift her with that sunrise smile and kiss all her doubts away.

But that was not her Fate.

Fighting alongside the gods and heroes at Ragnarök was what she was created and trained to do. It was the one certain thing in her existence. It would be foolish to imagine a different future for herself.

But Kai…

She would change his Fate for the better if it was the last thing she did.
