And kissed her long and deep as he held still within her, pulsing his lifeforce against her womb.

Thus, they fell into a dreamless, exhausted sleep. Spooned together upon the furs. Slowly reinvigorating their strength.

They would need it.

For, on the eighth day, they would remake their Destiny.

Day Eight, After: Reckoning.

When the first flare was fired at the break of dawn, they were ready for it.

“Knock ’em dead, big guy,” Ere said, swatting Kai on the meat of his shoulder.

“You hit like a girl,” Kai grunted.

Taking offense, Eir reached back and cuffed him on the side of the head for the disparagement to her sex.

He took the love pat in stride and grinned back at her, baring his teeth.

Ere smirked, missing nothing as he looked between them, and didn’t argue Kai’s point.

“Just as long as you don’t,” he retorted.

With that, Eir pulled her stallion up into a vertical leap with Kai riding behind her. With two mighty wing flaps, Nightmare reared into the sky, leaving Sorin, Ere and the village militia behind as the last line of defense.

The wind whistled with iciness and speed as they rode toward the north to intercept the Frost Giant. Kai curled himself around Eir to protect her from the frigid cold, but his hold was loose enough not to impede her movement.

The furious ride didn’t allow for communication, but the silence didn’t bother Kai.

They’d said and done everything that needed to be said and done last night. He knew where she stood with him. He knew she loved him, wanted him. No matter what happened, he knew that she would always remember him.

For a moment, they broke through the dark, ominous clouds that ushered a heavy blizzard onto the lands below, an unnatural storm of the jötunn’s making.

A pale sun weakly spread its rays above the black shroud of clouds. But Kai still reveled in its warmth.

Perhaps he would die this day. Perhaps he would never wake again. There was no guarantee of being brought back to life. His life and death were at the Jade Emperor’s whim.

And if death awaited him, he would not meet it in vain. Not just for the humans he protected this time, but for himself.

Because he would always live in Eir’s heart.

The prospect of death made him feel keenly alive. Now, with Eir in his arms, he felt it all—

The warmth of the sun’s rays. The light upon his eyelids like a physical touch.

The steady beat of his heart. Her heart.

His woman’s scent wrapped around him, ingrained and imprinted into his skin.

This time, Kai would fight not only to protect, to dominate, to win.

He would fight tolive.

And then, Eir made her stallion dive beneath the clouds again, taking them into the blustering winds and freezing dark.

“Ready?” she growled, taking up her long spear in one hand while keeping Nightmare’s mane clutched in the other.
