Back to his parents, his twin and her Mate, his son (who called him Uncle) and the cavern atop the tallest mountain where Sorin and he made their private nest. He missed his friends. The Tiger King and his enclave. Mike, Yas and Maddie.

And he wanted to count Kai amongst his family now that they were reunited. Somehow, he had to convince the Master to let Kai come home with him. But this time, he had nothing to bargain with.

Kai did not speak, nor did he seem aware of the Master’s ire. For that matter, he seemed oblivious to all of them, lost in his own thoughts.

“If the Wish is what I think it is, it wouldn’t have doneyouany good if we brought it back,” Ere said.

“The wish would only come true for the person who planted the seed and picked the fruit. You weren’t there.”

The Master’s mustache twitched with impatience.

“I never said bring backmywish.”

He waved a hand almost entirely hidden in the long, voluminous sleeve of his robes.

“Well, I have no more use for your two for the time being. As for you…”

He turned to Kai.

“Wait!” Ere cried, stepping forward.

The Master turned back to him with barely contained annoyance.

“What will you do with my brother?” Ere demanded. “Don’t send him back into isolation. Don’t send him into deadly battles. How long have you used him to fight your wars? Hasn’t he done enough? I want him to come home with me and Sorin.”

The Master tsked while shaking his head, as if disappointed in Ere’s outburst like an elderly sage disapproving of a wayward child.

“You did not complete the quest,” the Master said.

“Your wish is not granted.”

He regarded Kai again and lifted his hand, flicking the air as if in dismissal.

Ere was certain something was supposed to happen. He braced himself for it. Whenever the Master made that gesture, someone or something disappeared. Or, in the case of Ere, hisvoicedisappeared that one time.

Involuntarily, he stretched out a hand to grasp Kai’s arm or shoulder. Anything to keep connection with his dragon brother. To hold on to him.

Nothing happened.

Meanwhile, Ere managed to grab hold of Kai, clutching his bicep with both hands, while the other man flicked him a look of mild annoyance.

The Master waved his hand again. This time, it was more of a broad, sweeping motion. As if he was forcibly willing his magic to work.

And, still, nothing happened.

“Confound it all!”

It was the first time Ere had witnessed the Master losing his cool. Well, that wasn’t instigated by Ere himself.

“Take him with you then,” the Master grouched. “He no longer belongs in the Celestial Realm, it seems. Your debt is indeed growing exponentially, dragon.”

The ageless old man speared him with a warning glare.

“Until next time.”

With that, the Master poofed into thin air.

Right before Ere, Sorin and Kai disappeared as well.
