“Ah.”

She correctly interpreted his words to mean that they’d gone temporarily on a trip. This happened at least four to six times a year.

“Feel like some company tonight?”

He rolled his shoulders in a half-hearted shrug.

“I got you.”

She smirked and batted her long lashes at him.

“You sure do, handsome,” she said.

Kai had learned that this was “flirting.” Ere told him the moment he’d first met Mike that it was her “default mode.”

“But you could cultivate other kinds of companionship if you wanted,” she encouraged, tipping her chin toward the club floor at large.

“We got a good crowd tonight. Some skiers wanting to test themselves on the slopes. A few passers-through, sightseers. Two pretty gals are eyeing you like the manly buffet you are as we speak. A blonde and a redhead.”

Kai surreptitiously slid his eyes their way, then slid them back to focus on his drinks.

“Not interested,” he grunted.

Mike nudged him with her shoulder playfully.

“Come on, big guy,” she coaxed. “I’ve never seen you take up any of the countless women coming through these parts salivating over and throwing themselves at you every chance they get. Men either. And there’s been plenty of interested bucks too. Why don’t you give it a try? Might leave you with less of a headache than the alcohol.”

“No,” he simply replied, downing his second shot.

She shook her head at him, not so much in disappointment or chagrin as in confusion.

“I don’t get you Beastly types. Especially the older ones,” she mused, referring to the Animal Spirits that sought refuge in the Tiger King’s enclave and secretly assimilated with the townsfolk. Only a handful of humans knew the truth about the immortals in their midst. All of them were friends of Ere’s or Mated to one of their Kind.

“It’s like you’re all demi-sexual or something.”

Kai cocked an eyebrow at her, not understanding the term.

“It means you don’t get attracted to anyone who is notthe onefor you. It means that despite all that testosterone practically oozing out of your pores, you’re not tempted to fool around.”

Kai grunted in confirmation, finishing his last shot.

“Fooling around” was a good way to describe the act. What would it make him but an absolute fool to slake his primitive urges with any warm, willing body, when afterwards, the constant ache in his heart and soul would magnify exponentially? There were easier, more expedient ways to take care of his physical needs. It was why he had two hands.

That didn’t prevent the blonde and the redhead from meandering over, however, as if the narrowed-eyed look he’d briefly slid their way had been an open invitation.

“Hi!” the blonde chirped from his left side, standing way too close, invading his space.

“Are you from around here? Do you know the best paths to trek up those mountains? Maybe you can show me around…I’m going to be here for five whole days!”

Kai shifted uneasily on his stool, trying to lean away.

But he was caged in from the other side by the buxom redhead.

“Me too!” the other woman squealed to be heard over the loud music, the sharp sound making Kai wince and jerk his head back.

“My name is Amber-Rose. This is my friend Stephanie. We’d love for a gorgeous lumberjack like you to help us navigate these parts. You must know these mountains like the back of your hand, huh?”

Lumberjack?
