“What happened?” he finally asked.

Her explanation was mind-boggling. He was too orgasmically befuddled to follow.

Yes, he knew what a Pure soul was. It was the only kind of soul that could be reborn. It was how Rai was reborn as Ere. Legends had it that all Kings of Beasts and dragons possessed Pure souls too, by virtue of the powerful magic they carried within them.

Tal and Benjamin had Pure souls as well, though Tal was immortal and Benjamin was still human. One day, the boy would have his own Awakening. Distantly, Kai wondered what memories he would obtain of his past lives when that event occurred.

She took a deep breath to begin her story while she prepared their meal with sure hands.

He wondered whether she’d cooked for other men before. The thought of it alone made him scowl.

“Don’t worry,” she said, meeting his eyes, “I only cook for my sisters. The women who fought with me in the military, and who I’ve started a business with. You’re the only man I’ll ever cook for.”

His scowl immediately lightened.

But how did she know to soothe him?

“I can hear your thoughts,” she said. “We’re truly Mates now, right?”

He nodded slowly, struck with wonder.

He had a Mate. He hadEir. How did he ever get so lucky?

“Tell me,” he urged, giving her his full attention.

And so, she began.

“After you, Ere and Sorin disappeared from my realm, I went to the Red Witch’s mountain to plant the magical apple seeds. They yielded one wish tree and one fruit. After I made my wish, I was imprisoned in Hel for many centuries, until the end of worlds. Just as my Fate foretold, I fought alongside my sisters and the other gods against the demons and the jötnar. Everyone from my pantheon, gods and monsters alike, perished; only humans survived, ushering a new age.”

“What did you wish for?” he asked.

She paused in her cooking to smile lopsidedly at him.

“Simple,” she replied.

“I wished for you to have everything your heart desires, no matter what. Perhaps it was the wish that granted me my Pure soul, not Freya. I’ll never know for sure. I just know that every life I’ve lived has been a stepping stone in my quest to find you again.”

Ah. So simple.

Yet not at all. Few people would have wished for the fulfillment of someone else’s dreams when they held so much power in their hands.

Yet Eir did it for him, without hesitation.

Kai was humbled into silence.

“No more imprisonment at your gods’ behest? Check,” Eir said with relish. “Reunited with long-lost family and friends? Check.”

“Finding my Mate and keeping her forever?” he inserted.

“You got it,” she quipped.

Then, in all seriousness she murmured low, “You have me for however long you want me, dragon warrior. I will never leave you again.”

She leaned across the counter to kiss him quick and hard before pulling back again, lest she got further distracted from making supper.

“It took me a couple hundred incarnations to get here, but…” she shrugged.

“All that matters is that I’m here to stay. With a Pure soul to boot. And after my Awakening, I’m immortal just like you.”
