“Why won’t you tell me what you know?” he asked in a pleading tone, trying to keep from sounding completely desperate.

“I know nothing,” Sorin replied, still staring into the low burning fire.

Not meeting Ere’s eyes.

I don’t believe you, Ere said in his mind, wondering if Sorin could still hear him telepathically in their humanoid forms.

Whether he did or not, Ere wouldn’t know. Because Sorin steered the topic away from himself.

“What about the red witch?” he asked briefly. The male never used more words than absolutely necessary, but Ere knew what he meant.

“Yes, I think she’s important. I think she could be a lead for us. Witches aren’t known for granting wishes, but it seems that she has some gift of prophesy. Perhaps she knows something about the Wish of Wonders.”

Ere narrowed his eyes in contemplation, turning his observations during this night around and around in his busy brain.

“I heard that she supposedly dwells in an ice castle on an island across the northern seas. At the edge of worlds, no less. This is almost a direct quote from the Skald.”

Sorin nodded once, his face grim.

“Then that is our destination.”
