Chapter Four

“A man’s own hand is most to be trusted.”

—Viga Glum’s Saga

Kai wasn’t looking for the black-haired female. He simply decided to sleep outdoors again, away from all the commotion and stifling manmade hall.

That was all.

And if his senses were hyper-attuned to his surroundings, nostrils flaring for the faintest, elusive scent, fine hairs at the back of his neck raised and tingling in the humid, summer air—it didn’t mean he was searching for anyone in particular.

Whatwasthat scent?

Kai didn’t know the flower’s name, but he knew what it looked like. It grew in these lands, and he’d been here before in previous incarnations. Never in the same body.

He’d been here more than once. In fact, he looked forward to visiting this barbaric, pagan place. Filled with warriors just like him.

They knew how to have a bloody, good time.

The flower was a fragile, translucent white, which reminded him of her skin. It grew in dainty sprays of perfectly formed little bells amongst shoots of large green leaves upon the ground. Arresting in its simplicity. Deceptively charming.

Deceptive, because if eaten, it contained enough toxins to fell even a large man. Nigh stop his heart from beating.

Which, again, made Kai think of the woman who owned this scent. The blood-pumping muscle in his chest behaved strangely in her presence. That subtle, barely-there sweetness, combined with her unique female musk…intoxicating.

Kai’s pulse sped, heart thrashed, and cock throbbed just thinking about it. He breathed deeply with his eyes closed to imagine the ghost of it sweeping through his nostrils.

Herscent, for cruel gods’ sake.

What the fuck was wrong with him?

No.

He shook his head to clear it, like a wolfhound shaking off fleas.

He wasn’t chasing after her. That wasn’t why he was out here. He wasn’t expecting to encounter…anything.

Except, the object of his inexplicable, temporary obsession encounteredhim.

“Missing something, warrior?”

Kai’s eyes quickly adjusted to the dark of night, homing in on a figure leaning against a giant ash tree, shrouded in black. Only flashes of her moon-spun skin showed.

He considered her for a long moment, the way he carefully evaluated a formidable foe. Though she seemed physically weaker than he, given her size and sex, a palpable aura of power pulsed around her.

He knew instinctively that she would be a worthy opponent should they evertussle.

“Come,” she beckoned with her throaty, womanly voice alone, her body still and all but invisible against the tree.

“I don’t bite.”

Her white teeth suddenly flashed in the night in a feral grin.

“At least, not in any way you won’t enjoy.”

Kai scowled.

She was toying with him.
