It was self-explanatory.

“Do they not feed you in dragon prison?” Ere’s eyes filled with both anger and sadness.

Why did he care so much?

“I am always hungry when awakened. Defeating a foe makes me more so.”

Ere was quiet for a while.

And then he mumbled, “I wonder why some dragons are beloved like Divina and Cloud. Even Rui. But others are…not.”

Kai rolled his shoulders in a I-don’t-give-a-fuck shrug. In his estimation, it was understandable that dragons who killed gods were treated with wariness at best, abhorrence at worst.

“Areyoubeloved?” he asked of Ere, actually curious about the answer.

The male pondered this for a few seconds.

“I am tolerated, I think. But if I’m not mistaken, the JE and Fufu are starting to develop a soft spot for me.”

“Do not trust it. Gods have no soft spots,” Kai warned.

“Huh,” Ere mused thoughtfully. “I expect you’re right.”

He inhaled deeply, clearly intending to start another long-winded discussion.

“So what do they send you—”

“Enough,” Kai barked, putting his foot down, patience at an end.

“We camp. I hunt meat. You make fire. No more talk.”

“Well, no need to go Neanderthal on me,” Ere complained. “You were doing so well just now, using your articles and minding your participles.”

Kai had no idea what he was blathering about.

“Good chat though. Let’s catch up more tomorrow!”

Gods save him.

“They head north,” Mist reported, her voice as soft as the cool mountain breeze.

Despite being in the middle of summer, the air chilled around them the closer to the edge of worlds they wandered. Not only because of the direction in which they traveled, but because of the landscape and those who dwelled in these mountains and plains.

Creatures of Old that wielded magic beyond man’s ken.

“Soon, they will come to the Dead Lands,” Mist predicted. “With the conveyances they have, they will perish before they cross it.”

Eir and her sister sat upon their steeds atop a particularly tall plateau overlooking the plains below. Far into the distance, the travelers moved like ants, but she could just make them out with her eagle eyes.

It helped that the “ant” that held her interest was large enough to pass for a beetle.

“You seem to take undue notice of these men’s affairs,” Eir murmured off-handedly.

“Only becauseyoudo, sister,” Mist batted back innocently.

Eir slid a look of chagrin in the other Valkyrie’s direction.
