Kai wanted to bite that plump, soft flesh as well. He’d never been one for kissing—it wasn’t necessary for rutting—but he had the irresistible urge to fuck her mouth with his tongue.

“I don’t feel anything about it,” she answered finally.

“Death comes to take us all. Even immortals. Even the gods.”

“You would not hesitate to rip a man from his wife? A father from his child?”

He didn’t know where these questions came from. He’d certainly never asked them of himself, for all the beings he’d killed in his long existence. He’d always only done what he was sent to do.

But…

Once in a blue moon, he wondered. It was a dangerous thing to do. For, it was the same train of thought, inkling of emotion, that led him to rise up against the gods with Rai and Sai in the beginning.

And look what happened.

If there was a dragon hell, then he was living it. Imprisoned and frozen all of his existence save the rare occasions he was released to be used. A weapon of destruction.

They were similar in this way.

Perhaps this was why his questions came when he was with her. She, the Valkyrie, was the deliverer of death. And he, the berserker, was the cause of it. Who would understand if not her?

She met his eyes when she spoke:

“It is pointless to struggle against Fate. Futile to delay death. Wives can find new mates. Children grow up.”

“You don’t believe that a man can change his Destiny? That there are things worth fighting for? Even death?”

They stared into each other’s eyes, unblinking and intense. Something in her gaze flickered. A falling star reflected in dark green pools.

“No,” she said with finality.

“The Universal Balance must be preserved for the good of all. No one soul is worth more than the next. It is better to accept Fate when it comes.”

“You have never tried to change a soul’s Fate?” he persisted, not knowing why he did. He was inexplicably frustrated by her answer. Frustrated with himself in turn.

“You have never hesitated to touch them with death?”

Her gaze flickered again as she stared him down.

And then, she slid those entrancing beams of light away for a moment, as if she was trying to find a distraction in the small enclosure. When they focused on him once more, they shimmered with determination.

And raw, undilutedneed.

“Step out now, warrior,” she commanded low.

“I have whetted my appetite with the victuals provided. It is time for me to truly feast.”
