But the other Valkyrie kept pace easily.

“The irony is that you like ass play with your partners,” the confounded woman went on, despite Eir’s rising ire.

“And from what I can tell, that berserker brute of yours has a mighty fine pair of masculine buttocks. Surely, you have partaken of the bounty?”

“You are not nearly as nice as everyone thinks you are,” Eir complained.

Mist chuckled airily, her voice like wind chimes, light and melodic.

“Come, sister,” she urged, serious once more.

“Share your burden. We, all of us, are with you no matter what may come. Just tell us what you need, and we will be here. We will do everything in our power to support you.”

Eir did not speak for a very long time, thoughts churning through her mind like a windstorm.

Finally, she said, “I want the village to survive this time. I want the humans to live.”

Mist simply listened, giving her full attention.

“I want this becausehewants it. Whatever his reasons, it doesn’t matter. I stay to help however I can. I will fight by his side in the coming battle.”

“And then?”

Eir shook her head.

“I don’t want to think about afterwards. I am not ready for that decision.”

“What do youwantto do?” Mist asked softly.

Eir took a deep breath and released the truth:

“I want him to live. I want him to be free. To fight only if he chooses to. And for himself. Not for anyone else.”

“You could persuade him to choose Valhalla,” Mist pointed out carefully.

“Aye.”

“By convincing him that he’d be choosingyou.”

“Aye,” Eir whispered.

“It is what our Great Father commanded of you.”

Eir gave one brief nod.

“But it is not what you want to do,” Mist surmised.

“No.”

“Why not, sister?”

“Because…”

Eir struggled to find the right words.

All she could say was—

“He deserves more. He deserves everything he’s never been given. Never been allowed to take and own.”
