Most of all, he reveled in the way she kissed him.

The way she twined their fingers, squeezing him tight when she came, holding him close when he broke apart for her.

In his weakest, most vulnerable moments when he poured everything he had into her, when their eyes met and held, thatwas the connection he craved most of all. She didn’t deny him anymore. Shesawhim.

For the first time in his long existence, Kai felt truly known.

Because of this, he was unspeakably, deliriously happy.

“Mmm,” the woman responsible for his loony grin purred atop his chest, the hand covering his left pec toying with his nipple. Flicking it with the tip of her nail, sending achy vibrations all the way through his well-used cock and balls.

“This is new.”

One fingertip traced the ancient runes he’d had the village artisan tattoo there. It was far neater and more legible than the lines he etched himself in more private places. Thank the gods for his accelerated healing powers despite the human form. Else, unhealed tattoos would have made their exertions over the past ten or so hours unbearable.

Well, Kai probably still would have gritted his teeth and bore it, raw flesh or not. He wouldn’t have passed up Eir’s claiming of him for anything.

“It is not in my world’s tongue,” she noticed. “What does it say?”

Suddenly shy, Kai remained silent.

Though Eir had opened to him, and what they did together was much more than rutting, he didn’t know if she felt what he felt. It made his heart throb painfully to think that she might not.

And if that was the case, he didn’t want to know it.

If this made him a coward, he owned it. What they had now, this connection, it was enough. It was more than he’d ever had.

Besides, he wasn’t going to live much longer. One way or another, he’d die and repeat the cycle of his existence. He was grateful that he had these moments with her now. Eternally grateful that he could feel such unbelievable joy.

And maybe, just maybe, he would not be forgotten when he departed this world.

He knew without a doubt that his soul would always remember Eir. Whether he went to Valhalla or back to his own realm, he was hers forevermore.

He would never have another, as the markings on his body testified. He would always wear them with pride.

No matter the shell, his insides would never change.

“You deny me an answer,” she growled with mock displeasure, bracing on her elbows on top of his torso, looking down at him.

Her hands curled into claws upon his pectorals and scratched red streaks into his skin as punishment.

Kai grunted at the small pain and bore it manfully. He threaded one hand through her hair, pulling it back from her face to gaze into those sparkling green pools.

Wordlessly, he smiled up at her, crinkling his eyes.

He couldn’t help it. He couldn’t contain the joy inside.

Those runes over his heart could be read clearly if she looked closely enough. All she had to do was see the wish of his soul swirling in the depths of his eyes.

He bared all to her.

Slowly, an answering smile curved her lips. As if she couldn’t help it either. As if she couldn’t resist.

“You take my breath away when you smile,” she murmured, keeping their gazes fused.

“These lines…”

She traced the etchings at the corners of his eyes, and followed the grooves bracketing his mouth, deep enough to be seen and felt even through his dense beard.
