Was the Master speaking through him? Had the Master managed to overtake him?

Was Sai still in there somewhere?

I am me,the creature who was both Sai and not Sai said in her mind.

I am the male you want. The one you love.

Come with me now, so that we can be together eternally. You will be the Queen of the fae, both Light and Dark. And I will be your Prince.

Isn’t that what you want?

Brigid had never wanted to rule anyone. She wanted only to help her friends, those mischievous, lovely, wonderful, magical creatures. She loved her human family. She loved the frailty and strength of humans, how passionate they could be, how innocent and wild.

So, she replied with her truth now:

I do not want to be the Queen of anyone, she said softly in her mind.

The only truth in your statements is that you are the man I want. The dragon I love. I only wantyou.

And no matter what happens, I will always love you.

My Sai.

His face flickered for a moment, a mere ripple across the icy mask. Gone, before she could read it.

Now, his mouth curved in a darkly triumphant smile. A smile she’d never seen Sai wear before.

Then you must come with me, Brigid. I will suffer endless agony if you do not.

As he spoke, his black eyes were shot through with red, until blood tears trickled down the corners of them, over his starkly pale cheeks.

Brigid gasped at the ghastly sight. Her heart squeezed, and her throat threatened to close.

Sai was in unimaginable pain right now, she knew without a doubt. Though she could not see them, she couldfeelthat all of his accumulated wounds had opened anew beneath his clothes.

His hands no longer held weapons; they were discarded upon the forest floor. As his arms hung limply by his sides, blood trickled down his wrists to his fingertips, dripping slowly drop by drop.

As if marking every second that passed. Every second that she didn’t answer was a second Sai’s lifeblood bled away.

I will not die, you see,the not-Sai continued inexorably.

The Master has a way of keeping me alive, yet ever on the verge of death. Enough that I feel my wounds keenly. Enough to make me wish for death.

Only you can change my fate, my Queen.

Only you can stop them from hurting me.

His face was covered with tracks of blood now. They trailed down his jaw and neck and dripped from his sharp, angular chin. The hand he extended trembled infinitesimally.

Come.

Brigid.

She couldn’t stop her own tears from welling. She couldn’t hold them in.

Heaven above! He was in so much pain!

She couldfeelit, even if she couldn’t see the evidence of it tearing him apart.
