It seemed, now, that she’d been born to love him. Somehow, they found each other. He made himself known to her.

It was Sai’s doing all along.

The Master must have seen or suspected somehow. That their favorite prisoner was finding escape through his dreams.

And now that he loved Brigid, and she knew this without the shadow of a doubt, as did the Master, they wanted to possess the object of his undying love so that they could possess him too. In ways they never could before.

She didn’t blame them for desiring Sai, honestly. Who wouldn’t?

If the Master possessed Brigid’s body, and Sai was under their command, even the part of him that fought against them would hesitate to fight against what little remained of his beloved. Soulless shell though she might be at that point.

She knew this about Sai.

He was unfailingly loyal. He would never do anything to hurt the Master’s new body. He would even love it, to his own detriment. With the Master’s darkness bound to his soul, he might not even realize the difference any more.

Eventually, the Master would truly possess him. Once and for all.

But no one would force Sai into what he didn’t want if Brigid had anything to do about it.

The Master had miscalculated.

Love was not a weakness. It was strength.

It waseverything.

And Brigid would use that love to her advantage. She and Sai would conquer all. The Master was in for a one hell of a shock.

They were deep enough in the ocean by now that the water lapped at her chin. She used the remaining seconds she had left before she was entirely submerged to say:

“I love you, Sai. No matter what. Remember. You have my breath inside of you. I have yours inside of me. We are one. Now and forever.”

With that, she sucked in a deep breath and held it.

As the dark gray sea engulfed her.

Ben glanced up at the fast-moving dark clouds toward the north.

It seemed that the ominous black mass was racing toward the sea just as Ben and Annie were, crouched close to the necks of the galloping unicorns.

Something was happening there. He could sense it.

On the beaches by the sea was where the final reckoning would go down. Or, more to the point, beneath the crushing tides.

He didn’t know what he and Annie could do when they got there, but they would do everything in their power to support Brigid and Sai.

At the same time, as if guided by an internal clock, he knew that the Jade Emperor’s sandglass was running out of time.

One way or another, they would return to the modern world. Back to the Celestial Realm with the object of their quest or without.

He didn’t want to think it, butifBrigid was defeated by the Master, he and Annie could perhaps still pull Sai out of this world. They could still save him if he was indeed the Pale Prince. The myth come to life.

If, when time ran out, they could get a hold of Sai, they might be able to save him. Back in the modern world he would be reunited with Ere and Kai, his dragon brothers. Given time, they might even find a way to come back, see if they could have a redo. And with different decisions made, perhaps they could change the course of destiny and come away with victory the second time around.

Theoretically speaking, Ben didn’t see why that wouldn’t be possible. If they came back in time once, shouldn’t they be able to do it again?

But instinctively, he knew that this was their one and only chance. He certainly rooted for all of their success in this ultimate battle, but he had to prepare for the worst.
