She smiled at him with her eyes, seemingly at home in his watery world, protected by his breath, as if she were half mermaid or nereid.

She coaxed his claws open to find the black seed in the middle of his scale-covered palm. Between her own hands, she formed a small ball of light, like the glow of a firefly.

When she dropped it into Sai’s palm, it immediately swallowed up the black seed. Until what was left of the Master was suspended in the middle of the glowing orb.

They could hear the Master’s muttering and hissing if they listened closely enough. But the orb they were trapped within muffled their complaints.

Are you sure they can’t be destroyed?Sai asked grudgingly.

Yes, I’m sure,Brigid replied in their minds.

But trapped like this, the Master will not be able to wield their powers like they used to.

Look, Brigid beckoned him, swiveling her head around to indicate their surroundings.

Already, their world is receding. The monsters are gone.

True enough, the Master’s nether realm was fading like a dirty bubble that could no longer hold its shape. As the darkness receded, the deep greens and clear blues of the real-world sea shone through.

Though they were several meters deep, beams of moonlight somehow filtered through the waves, its ghostly fingers reaching Brigid and Sai, wrapping them in a wan embrace.

Schools of dolphins shuttled by, swimming in happy circles around them. All kinds of fish, octopi, squids, crustaceans and jellyfish joined in, as if paying homage to the reigning King and Queen of the deep.

The dragon and his fairy.

The changeling and her Pale Prince.

Sai imprisoned the black seed in one claw, and reverently held Brigid in the other. With a few undulations of his tail and sleek, serpent body, he broke through the surface of the waves.

“Hey!” Annie shouted from the shore, standing with the unicorns and Ben.

“We’re over here! Are you all right? What happened?”

Sai swam effortlessly to the beach. When it was shallow enough to stand, he walked on his hind legs as a dragon, still carrying his defeated foe in one claw and the light of his life in the other.

“Whoa…” Ben murmured beneath his breath, his eyes widening as he took in Sai’s dragon form.

“Wow…” Annie breathed, likewise astounded.

Sai puffed up his chest a little to be admired. He knew he was a magnificent sight to human eyes. Verily, he was a rare, singular sight for any eyes.

“What happened to the Master?” Ben had the presence of mind to inquire.

Brigid slid off from the seat of Sai’s palm and walked over to her friends, her soggy skirts dragging upon the sands.

“They are beaten and contained for the time being,” she answered, shaking out her tangled wet mane.

“I will keep them trapped and weakened in a prison of light for as long as I can.”

At this, she reached for the black seed suspended in the glowing orb, and Sai dutifully handed it to her.

As her hand touched his scaly claw, she beamed up at him with a radiant smile.

“You are the most beautiful creature I have ever beheld,” she said, holding his diamond gaze, not caring that there were witnesses gawking at them in fascination.

Sai lowered his narrow snout until half his face was hidden behind his enormous claws. He peeked coyly at her from beneath his long, silky lashes.

Brigid laughed delightedly at his shy flirtation and kept right on staring as if she couldn’t get enough of him. As if his serpent form pleased her to no end. And he was a marvel to be treasured.
