“You can,” she replied.

“But you said that once I step into one world, I cannot step back,” Sai sought to clarify. “I don’t know how to get back to this realm to step through the Mirror again.”

She nodded in agreement.

“And who knows how long it would take you to return to the Celestial Realm.”

Ben could see Sai hesitating. He wanted to see Ere, but he most wanted to be with Brigid. He didn’t want to risk too much time passing before returning to his Mate.

As if reading his thoughts, Seventh Sister added, “But, you are special, sea dragon. Made more so by the bond you share with your Destined Mate. She is a fairy queen, is she not?”

“How do you know these things?” Ben murmured, impressed.

And perhaps just a tad apprehensive.

She smiled again, blinking innocently.

“I see many things in the Mirror Pond. You lot are very entertaining.”

“You watch us?” Sai asked, his silvery brows drawing together in a quizzical frown.

She shrugged slightly.

“I see enough.”

“Does the Jade Emperor watch us?” Ben asked.

“Oh, Papa doesn’t need to watch anyone. He simply knows everything.”

She waved her hand in dismissal.

“As I was saying, you have your own magic, sea dragon. If you look within yourself, you will realize how to return to your Mate. There’s nothing easier. You have done it countless times before.”

Sai regarded her with skepticism and confusion. Until, suddenly, his face cleared, as if an epiphany dawned on him.

He turned to Ben with a broad grin, one that Ben had never seen him wear before. He was such a moody, solemn man. But now he looked like a carefree boy.

“I am ready, friend. Let’s go see Ere.”

“Are you sure?” Ben asked. He didn’t want to be responsible for Sai getting stuck in the modern world.

“I am certain,” came the definitive reply.

Ben turned to Annie next.

“Come on, we need to go.”

She looked reluctantly behind them, toward the peak where the Celestial Palace sat in all its golden glory.

Again, Miss Seventh seemed to read her mind.

“You will have many opportunities to come back, Annie,” she said. “Many more chances to see him again.”

Annie turned to her, eyes wide.

“Truly?”

Miss Seventh nodded.

“There are no lies in the Celestial Realm. Only truths.”

At that, Annie heaved a deep breath and stepped up to the Mirror’s edge as well.

With Sai and Annie on each side of him, Ben closed his eyes and imagined the time and place he wanted to go.

When he opened them, the surface of the pond spread in concentric circles, no longer reflecting the sunny skies above them, but rather the healing chamber at the Pure Ones’ base in New York City.

All three travelers took a breath and held it—

As they jumped with both feet into the pond.
