“We can?” Annie muttered beside him, but was quick to follow his lead.

They made a great team.

“You singled her out at the ball,” Ben thought out loud. “The entire crème de la crème of London society saw. Clearly, you want to court her favors, and you want everyone else to know. To prevent others from moving in on your territory perhaps?”

Annie nodded eagerly beside him.

“We are staying with the Rathbournes,” she added. “We are Lady Brigid’s new best friends. We can smooth your way to winning her.”

The man’s eyes narrowed once more.

“Why would you help me? You don’t know what I want.”

“Do you mean Brigid harm?” Ben asked outright.

There was a concerning hesitation. But then he answered:

“No, not I.”

For the life of him, Ben couldn’t hear a lie in those words. Perhaps it was only a partial truth, but it was good enough for now.

“Then let us strike a bargain,” Ben said.

“You answer our questions and don’t disappear on us for the next few days, and we’ll assist you with courting Lady Brigid. Deal?”

He stuck out his right hand toward the stranger.

For a long moment, the man merely stared at his extended limb, his brows drawn together in swift contemplation.

Finally, he took Ben’s hand in a quick but brutal squeeze, and Ben had to grit his teeth to keep from wincing from the strength of the stranger’s grip.

Dragon, indeed.

“Deal.”
