But how did one heal the soul? Or, more to the point—bring it back to life?

“It’s not like I can go back in time to ask the witch who bound his soul in the first place,” Eveline said.

“I don’t know about the reasons why, nor the conditions under which the spell was cast. Was it a protection spell or a curse? Did he exchange anything for it? All these questions and many more.”

“Can’t you put another spell on him?” Ere asked. “Something that protects him from this spell or negates its effects?”

“Spells don’t work like that,” she said.

When Ere’s face crumpled, she added, “But I’ll do everything I can. I fear I am not powerful enough to cast a spell that can counteract this one. Truth to tell, I mostly dabble. My magic doesn’t always work the way I want it to. This… this isrealpower. I’ve never seen anything like it. Not in all the histories of our Kinds.”

“Do you know of more powerful sorceresses or mages, Eveline?” Sophia asked.

“Can power be accumulated if more of you came together to perform a spell? After all, Clara and Annie both have magic in them. There must be others outside of our circle who possess the powers as well.”

“I can certainly dig into it,” Eveline replied. “I have access to both the Pure and Dark archives. All digitized now, thanks to Devlin.”

“I’ll help too,” Sophia said. “Seth and I can go through all of the documented and registered Immortal Kinds in the population database and identify individuals who might fit what we’re looking for.”

She looked back at Ere.

“Have you encountered anyone with powers like this on your quests, Ere? Perhaps that might also help explain what triggered Sorin’s decline.”

“It’s not a ‘Decline,’” Ere gritted out through his teeth.

Sorin’s condition was bad enough without using the same word that described a particular curse of the Pure Ones. This was definitely notthat.

Not the least because there was no cure for the Decline. And because one only suffered it when the one you loved with all your heart and soul didn’t love you back.

Sorin wouldneversuffer the Decline as long as Ere had anything to say about it.

“Apologies,” Eveline murmured. “Poor choice of words.”

Ere shook his head once. There was no time to dwell on his feelings or anyone else’s. Reviving Sorin was the only thing that mattered.

“On the first quest to the Dark Ages,” he began, “there was a woman called Morgan Le Fay.”

“TheMorgan Le Fay from the Arthurian legends?” Sophia asked, brows raised.

“Yes. There was also Guinevere, who turned out to be a dragon sorceress herself.”

“Guinevere?! Arthur’s Queen?” Sophia echoed.

“Unbelievable…”

“Finally, there was Merlin, who turned out to be a dragon himself. I’m not sure what powers he has besides the ability to take on the likeness of other men, at least one in particular. But according to Guinevere, she was the one who gave him the illusion. At least in the legends, Merlin was a powerful sorcerer.”

“Where are they now?” Rain asked.

“Morgan is still in the Dark Ages where we left her, I assume,” Ere replied. “Guinevere is dead. And Merlin is in the Celestial Realm recovering from old wounds.”

“All right,” Sophia said.

“Not the easiest thing to access Morgan and Merlin’s powers, but at least we know they’re out there. Who else have you encountered that might matter?”

“On the second quest to ancient Greece, there were no witches, per se,” Ere reflected. “But we did take a journey into the Underworld to retrieve a few items which turned out not to be what the Song of Destiny was, but also to get back Andros’ trapped soul.”

Rain widened her eyes.
