I glance over at Francesca, who smiles gratefully and stands up with Edmund, holding hands. She pulls the chain around her neck, revealing the ruby ring that was hiding under her blouse.

“We have an announcement.”

Mom screams. My brothers shout and laugh. Dad gets up and wraps his arms around Francesca and Edmund.

“It’s about time, you gringo wussy. We’ve all been waiting.”

“You have?” says Edmund. “We’ve been waiting for the right time to tell you.”

All my brothers crowd around Francesca and Edmund, offering their congratulations, just like they did a few days ago to Olive and me. Hugs are exchanged all around, and Mom is already pressing them to set a date.

Olive and I watch the bustle, happy for my sister and relaxing into this new reality for our own relationship. It’s new, but I have a feeling it’s forever.

Once the excitement dies down a little, and Mom wanders into the kitchen to serve some celebratory ice cream, I take her to the side and apologize, especially to her, for the deception.

“You’re the last person I want to lie to,” I say. “I want you to know that.”

She pats me on the cheek. “I know more than you realize. Just make sure you always tell the truth to that woman. She sees the sun and moon in you.”

“It’s just a reflection of herself in my eyes, that’s all.”

Mom winks at me with a big grin.

“And Mom? Can you hold on to Abuela’s ring for me? I have a feeling I’ll need it sooner than later.”

THE END
