“You play any instrument. So, if I handed you my recorder, you could play me a tune?”

There’s that smile again. “You have a recorder?”

“Well, not here, no. But doesn’t every kid have to play the recorder in music class in grade school?”

He pushes his plate away and folds his arms over his chest.

“Yes. And yes, I could. But no. I don’t want to do that. Not my favorite instrument.”

“And to think I was hoping you would play some ‘Three Blind Mice’ for me.”

With another soft laugh, he gets up and brings his plate and glass to the sink. Okay, if he cooks and does his own dishes, we’ll at least get along okay. If this were Chloe, we’d go curl up on the couch together and binge watchGrace & Frankiefor the fourth time. But I assume Gideon has used up his laugh quota for the day and will be heading back to his room in a minute.

“You’re a big reader, huh?” He looks at me as he fills the sink with soapy water.

“Yep.”

“Mind if I look at your shelves?”

My cheeks flush. For a second, I could hear him sayingrack. Not that anyone calls it a book rack. Shows where my mind is. I give myself a mental shake and nod.

“Not at all.” Feeling a little awkward now—maybe I’ll make a shirt for him that says Chloe’s little brother—I smooth my hands over my thighs and turn to grab my book. “Oh. Wait. Chloe said you wanted to read11/22/63.”

“You have it?” His eyes light up. Hmm. Maybe we actually have something in common. He might be a book nerd. If he reads that book, we could talk about it. Then again, if he’s a slow reader, it might take him several weeks to get through that one. I’m not sure I can deal with him being here that long.
