“How about tennis?”

“Don’t play,” she answers.

“But I do.”

“What? You wanna know where to play?”

I nod when she looks at me. “Best courts.”

“I have no idea.” She rolls her eyes. “I can give you the name of my yoga studio.”

“Nope.”

Skye leads me to a tent where they sell fresh flowers. She studies them all with the intensity of a performer memorizing her lines before taking the stage. I’m confused when she turns to walk away.

“Aren’t you going to buy any?” I call after her as I follow.

“No. I just like to look.”

“Hmm.” I glance back at the flowers, relieved to see the vendor making a sale to someone else. “What’s your favorite? Flower?”

“Blue delphinium.”

“I knew a jazz singer once named Blue Millennium.”

Skye glances up at me and rolls her eyes. “Do you sing?”

“Not really.” I toss my empty coffee cup in a trash can as we pass it. Feeling a little awkward with my hands, I shove them in my pockets as we keep walking.

“Tell me something about you,” she says, and her voice almost drips with enthusiasm.

“Like what?”

“I dunno. Where did you live just before you came here?”

“Colorado.” I feel her eyes on me, so I shoot her a grin and shrug. “I was running a bar there.”

“You’re a jack of all trades.”

“And you’re a jane of all trades.”

“What does that mean?”

“I notice you own a lot of books by authors named Jane.” They’re on the shelves in her bedroom. I noticed a lot of romance books there Tuesday night. Including thetabooones that my mom reads on her tablet so no one sees the titles.

“And you likeGrace & Frankie,” I go on. “You’ve watched almost all of season one since I’ve been here.”

“I’ve watched it all,” she tells me. “Tell me more about you.”

“I had braces until I was fourteen. I didn’t learn to ride a bike until I was twelve.”

“Seriously?”

“Had no interest in it.”

“In all the times I was at your house when we were kids, I never really saw you. I told Chloe you were a ghost.”

“I went to a private school. Ambrose Academy had an excellent music program. My mom insisted.”
