“We’d have to have more than one,” I answer. “Growing up as an only child gets lonely.”

“Yeah, but as an only child you can spend a lot of time at your best friend’s house, and then her brother might fall in love with you one day. Do you really want to rob our daughter of that experience?”

My heart flutters a little, but I push my knuckles into my chest and tell it to stop. He’s a charmer. He’s smoothing over our goodbye. Maybe for karma.

“Gideon.”

“Or,” he goes on, “I guess if we had two kids and one was a boy, we could name him Dick.”

I roll my eyes and press my lips together, but I still sob softly.

“Skylar.”

“What?”

“I love you, too.”

“Do you mean that?”

“I have never said that to anyone other than my pain-in-the-ass sister and my mom.”

“But do you mean it?”

“Yes.”

I dab at the corner of my eyes again and look around. I’m almost startled to see the world going on as it should outside my car. I put it in drive again and look over my shoulder before pulling into traffic.

“So.” He clears his throat. “What do you think?”

“I told you. Definitely two.”

His laugh sends a thrill through me.

“About the Arch. Will you be my date?”

I turn around the first chance I get and head back to the Cat.

“I’ll think about it.”

“I need to know. Right now.”

“Why? Do you have someone else to ask?”

“No, but I just really want to see the Arch.”

“Maybe when I get back from North Carolina.”

“I hate that you’re going.” The sincerity in his voice makes me feel bad for thinking it serves him right after how he walked away from me.

I pull back into the same spot where I was parked earlier and jump out of the car quickly. The door to the store is locked.

I pound on it with my free hand.

“Open the door, Gideon!” I yell into the phone.

“What?”

“Open the door.”
