Wren took his hand and shook it. “It’s nice to meet you.” Her eyes shifted to mine, looking unsure before going back to Colton. “I’m Wren. I, uh…”

“Atlas told me you’re staying in his guest house,” Colton interrupted. “How are you liking Cypress Falls?”

Her shoulders relaxed. “I’m really enjoying it.” Her expression brightened.

Something inside my rib cage fluttered.

Colton nodded. “That’s good. Hoping that everyone is giving you a proper dose of Southern hospitality.”

Wren giggled. “Oh, most definitely.”

"Good." He grinned. "How long you looking to stay?”

A shadow flitted over her face at his words. It was gone in an instant as she stifled it with another smile. “I’m not sure yet.” She shrugged, but I sensed her growing unease and shot Colton a look.

“Well, hopefully you won’t be going anywhere soon.” He drank his last gulp of beer. “Not only are you easy on the eyes, but everyone also seems to like you a whole hell of a lot.” He winked, though Wren didn’t react to it with as much enthusiasm as the hostess, Lily, had.

“Another round, guys?” Ty’s voice caught our attention as he picked up our empty glasses.

Colton nodded. Ty started to turn when his gaze caught on Wren. He almost did a double take.

“I thought you weren’t working tonight?” He narrowed his eyes.

Wren sighed. “I’m obviously not.” She picked up the skirt of her dress and rolled her eyes. “Ellie and I had dinner. Which reminds me, I should be getting back to her. She’s probably wondering where I went. That is, if she’s not flirting with the busboy.”

She smiled sweetly and turned, heading toward the staircase. I watched her go, hypnotized by the sway of her hips.

“You know what, Atty?” Ty’s voice broke my trance, and I turned. He set a full glass of beer in front of me, and I raised a brow, questioningly. “You should come to the falls with us this weekend.”

I frowned. I hadn’t been to the falls in years. It was beautiful, sure, but the hike to get there was long and the attraction of the place lost some of its splendor when you’d lived here most of your life.

“Why are you going to the falls?”

Ty glanced behind me where Wren had disappeared. “We’re showing Wren. Besides, Knox needs a day away from…everything. Figured it would be a good opportunity.”

Wren.

I reached for my beer; the cool glass soothed my hot skin. I took a drink, pretending I was thinking it over when I’d known the moment I heard her name I would go.

“I have nothing important going on. I guess I could.”

Colton laughed, and I almost upturned my whole beer on top of his head.

“Oh, I wish I wasn’t working, or I’d probably go with y’all.” He waggled his eyebrows at me.

I balled up my napkin and threw it at his face. “I’m not sharing my fries with you anymore,” I grumbled, remembering the fries I’d completely forgotten about.

I shoved a few in my mouth, wondering what exactly it meant that Wren had the ability to make me forget about a whole basket of French fries sitting directly in front of my face.

I grimaced, even though the fries were excellent.

It meant nothing good. Nothing good at all.
