I looked away, staring forward as I tried to get a grip on my hot, bubbling anger.

“You’re wrong.” I got out my wallet, throwing some cash on the bar and turning to her. “Cypress Falls is her home. There’s room for everyone here.” I leaned toward her, eyes narrowing. “I gave you the benefit of the doubt with the boyfriend thing. But I’m beginning to think you told Wren I was your boyfriend just to hurt her.”

She pressed her red lips together, her cheeks staining the same color. Her eyes were sharp as she glared at me. “You think it was easy for me to see her with you? I thought you were different, Atlas. You were always good to me when we went out, and I liked you. And I came back from vacation to see you with her.” She scoffed and looked away.

The room seemed to sway. I gripped the bar tight, staring at her. “I didn’t mean to hurt you, Liv.”

She took a long sip of her drink. “I’ve heard that before. They all say it, but never mean it.”

I gritted my teeth. “Look, Liv. I’m not one of your string of lowlifes. I enjoyed dating you, but I thought I’d made it clear that it simply wasn’t going to work with us. I get that you’re upset, but that’s no excuse for what you’ve done to Wren. I expected more from you. You’re better than this.”

With that, I turned, shoving off the barstool. I left her there, stunned and red-faced and hopefully a little bit ashamed too.
