“I know I’m supposed to wait until you’re healthy and healed, but I can’t.”

I tilted my head to the side. “Can’t wait for what?”

He cleared his throat and reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, velvet-wrapped box.

I stared at it, my heart beating so fast I thought I might have a heart attack. My eyes widened, bobbing between Atlas’s face and the small box. My breaths lodged in my lungs and soon my chest heaved as fast as his.

He knelt on a knee, and mine almost gave out. He opened the box, holding it out to me, his lips pulling out into a nervous half smile.

“I want to marry you, Starlight. I want you forever, and I can’t wait. I think I knew from the moment you jumped into my arms that you were mine. You were the rest of my life. Will you, please, do me the absolute honor of being my wife?”

Words. I couldn’t find my words as I stared at the sparkling round diamond surrounded by a halo of smaller ones. It was stunning, but it was his words that had taken my breath away. His request shocked my brain.

He wanted me to marry him? That was crazy. Insane. We’d known each other for so little time.

“Starlight?” Atlas whispered, and my eyes snapped up from the ring and to his face. He was still smiling, that half grin I loved so much. “Breathe.”

I gasped, sucking in the oxygen I’d lost. Tears welled in my eyes, but they had nothing to do with sadness this time. It was all joy. Nothing but happiness.

Because it didn’t matter how long we’d known each other. It didn’t matter that the world would think we were crazy. I loved Atlas more than I had ever loved anything. It felt as if I’d known him forever, and I wanted him for the rest of my existence.

I drew in another breath, nodding my head frantically. “Yes,” I breathed, a small, elated giggle escaping me. “Of course I’ll be your wife, Atlas.”
