Page 71 of That Feeling

Iwatch as her face morphs from shock to confusion to full-on tears.

“Baby, baby, what’s wrong?” I grab her, holding her tightly as she buries her face in my chest. Finally, I pull her face back to look at her. “Hey, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“You asshole!” She hauls back and hits me with both fists in my chest. “What the hell?”

“I’m sorry.” I brush her hair back from her face as the driver holds the door open for us. “Here, let’s get inside.”

“How did you . . . ?”

“Private plane,” I shrug.

“Of course you own a private plane.” She rolls her eyes and smacks my arm again. “I’m still mad.”

I laugh and pull her into my lap.

“Listen, I needed time was all. I was never done with us. I never stopped loving you. I was scared and worried and just needed time to process my own feelings. So thank you for giving that to me.”

Her lower lip starts to quiver and I reach forward and kiss it. “Don’t cry, baby girl, I’m here now.” I hold her in my arms for several minutes, breathing in her scent and savoring the weight of her body against mine.

“I missed this so much.”

“I did too. Thank you for inviting me to come to your family Christmas. That gesture was just what I needed.”

“What do you mean?”

“I didn’t know if you wanted to still be with me.” I watch her brows knit together. “When I saw Neal that night, he still seemed so blissfully in love with you that I feared that’s what you were running from. I thought that maybe you were scared of the feelings you had for him and just needed to run away from it, and that him coming back into your life was going to be this grand gesture that made you realize he was your person.”

She shakes her head. “No, not even close. It just made me realize even more that you are my person. I felt absolutely nothing when I saw him. The only thing I felt was complete relief when he said he was done and walked out of the bar.”

I cup her face with my hands and bring my forehead to rest against hers briefly as she whispers, “There’s nothing I want more in life than you—nothing I’ve been more sure of than you and us.”

She leans forward and kisses me softly. My hands snake their way into her hair as I thrust my tongue into her mouth.

“I was so scared of how intense things got with us so quickly, and the way I felt so comfortable and at ease with you like we’d know each other for a lifetime,” I tell her. “I wanted things with you I’ve never wanted with anyone before, and I felt so confident about them that it was exciting but also fucking terrifying.”

Her eyes study mine. “Wanted?” I can see the panic start to build.

“Want, baby—things I want with you. I want a life with you and I know I scared you talking about a baby,” my hand goes to rest on her belly, “and I don’t want that to trap you. I just love you so much that I want to share that bond with you.”

“Still?”

I chuckle. “Yeah, that fantasy doesn’t go away, trust me. I know it’s probably a little kinky that I get off on thoughts of knocking you up, but it’s not just sexual. It’s like this barbaric caveman desire to see you pregnant with my baby.”

“One thing at a time, big guy,” she smiles and kisses me again.

“Why wait?” I murmur against her lips as I reach over and hit the button that slides the divider up between us and the driver. “We have time before we get there for me to put a baby in you?”

I slide my hand up her shirt and pull the cup of her bra down to roll her nipple between my thumb and forefinger. Her head lolls forward as she nips at my neck.

“Mmm, somebody is feeling feral.” I laugh as she sinks her teeth into my flesh even harder. She peppers the spot with kisses, trailing them up my neck, across my cheek, then finally to my lips again.

“You haven’t even asked me to marry you yet, and you’re already trying to knock me up.” She gives me that coy smirk I’ve come to love so much.

“Hmm, I haven’t?” I say, shoving my hand into my jeans pocket and pulling out the ring my mother gave me. “Then what is this doing in here?”

Her face goes white. “Oh my God! Are you serious?” Her eyes go from mine to the ring then back to mine again.
