“Good. I’ve reviewed your credentials and résumé already. The last item is to call down to your last clinic and speak to the head for a reference.”

I gritted my teeth at the thought of him calling the one person who was out to sabotage me. The way I figured, I could play this one of two ways. Admit my mother and I had a falling out or use the relationship to my advantage for once.

“Of course, I don’t mind you calling the clinic. But a recommendation from my last boss would present some obvious bias since she happens to be my mother. So I brought a letter of recommendation from my residency at Stanford Medical and Dr. Lisa Thompson, the head of obstetrics there.” I produced the copy from my bag for him, hoping it was enough.

He looked it over. “I’m familiar with Dr. Thompson. And you’re right. Obviously, your last boss being your mother tells me exactly what she’d say. Although it does beg the question. Why did you leave?”

I went with a version as close to the truth as possible. “I spent most of my life in Orange County and wanted a change. My brother lives in the Los Angeles area, and a temporary assignment like this is what I need until I figure out my long-term goals.”

He nodded, seemingly satisfied with my answer, and stood up from the conference room table. “Makes sense. Can you start tomorrow by shadowing another doctor?”

“Absolutely.”

“Terrific. Dr. Brennan will be in shortly to give you all the details you’ll need to get started.”

I stood up and took his hand in a hearty shake. “Thank you, Dr. Marshall.”

As soon as he walked out, I breathed a large sigh of relief. Disaster avoided. This temporary job would allow me to continue to practice, give me a recent recommendation, and additionally allow me time to look for a permanent position elsewhere. I couldn’t think of one possible downside.

Until there was a knock on the door and none other than my night-of-hot-sex man-of-fantasy, Lucas, walked through the door.
