“It’s not as if I’m not thinking about it too,” he murmured quietly. “I’ve never had this situation. Not sure what to do with it.”

That made two of us. “How about we just, you know, try to be friends.”

He quirked a brow. “Friends?”

I chuckled at the way he said the word, as if friendship with a woman, especially one he’d slept with, was a foreign concept. Hell, it probably was, and we were fooling ourselves to think we could manage it. But there weren’t a lot of choices here. I didn’t want to go into this new job sleeping with my coworker, and even if I was willing to do so, he clearly didn’t want anything resembling a relationship. “Yeah, friends.”

“With benefits?” he quipped.

We both burst out laughing. “Afraid not. Sex is off the table.”

While stopped at a red light, he held out his hand. “Deal. Sex is officially off the table.”

A handshake should be benign. But touching my palm to Lucas’ was a mistake. The moment I made eye contact, I knew it was the same for him.

“Brooke, I—”

I couldn’t let him finish his sentence. “We should go before the patient gets impatient.”

He blinked twice before removing his hand, and shaking off the trance which had almost caused us both to forget our heads.
