Brooke

Iwatched in awe as Lucas spoke with the older woman, sounding as though she were a lifelong friend of the family instead of a mere patient. The way he took his time and put her at ease brought the appointment to a level of care I’d never imagined. No wonder he enjoyed doing house calls.

As we got back into the car after the conclusion of the appointment, I had to ask. “How long has Myrna been a patient?”

“My patient for four years, but she was at the clinic at least five before that.”

I was about to compliment him on the level of care, but he began talking about the best mapping apps to use for traffic. While he went on, lamenting about school zones and roads with speed bumps, I thought about Myrna and the peace she seemed to feel about joining her husband again. What a love they must’ve had.

“Did you hear me, Brooke?”

“Huh? No, sorry, I was spacing.”

“I asked if you could bring up the file for our next patient.”

“Oh, yeah.”

“Actually, I’ll tell you most of what you’ll read. The next patient is Shannon Larson. She went through IVF and is seven months pregnant with her first child, a baby girl. She and her husband, Chad, have been patients of mine for the last year. This type of setup happens a lot where I end up referring my patients to Dr. Fitzpatrick once they are expecting.”

“Makes sense.”

“The portable sonogram equipment is in the back along with the heart rate monitor. I can show you how to set them both up. You also have your kit to test the urine and blood if needed. We have a lab at the office which can process samples within twenty-four hours. You can call in or else have the nurse call you with the results. Additionally you can have a lab tech accompany you or meet you for appointments when more extensive bloodwork is required. There’s a nurse who assists with house calls, so long as you schedule her far enough in advance.”

“Did Dr. Fitzpatrick ever take a nurse with her?”

“Not usually, but when she first started, she would bring in a lab tech to draw blood. But you can ask her all about it later today. She wants us to stop by for you to meet her and go over some of her patients.”

It would certainly be helpful to talk to Meredith and go through her patient files together.

For the second appointment, we pulled into the driveway of another beautiful home in the Hollywood Hills. A petite blonde with an adorable pregnant belly greeted us at the door. Shannon, I presumed. Beside her was her tall husband, Chad, with a movie-star smile. They looked like a magazine-worthy power couple.

Lucas made the introductions, and I took the woman’s hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Shannon. I’m Dr. Brooke Morrison.” I could imagine it was unnerving to start over with a new OB in the middle of a pregnancy. My job was to set her at ease regarding the transition and ensure she felt comfortable letting me take care of such an important life event.

“Nice to meet you too.”

For the first time in my career, my mother and her reputation hadn’t become a part of the conversation. How refreshing to be the only Dr. Morrison for a change.

“Tell me all about how you’ve been feeling.”
