“No, no. Please don’t. Lucas would be disappointed, and there will be plenty of opportunities for us to have dinner together in the next few weeks.”

She sighed but went with it. “Okay. Everything going well with the job? With Lucas?”

I was thankful I’d turned away to make Henry’s bottle so she couldn’t see my blush. Never had I experienced a kiss as hot as the one he’d laid on me this morning, but I refused to dwell on it. Nor would I ever allow a repeat. And the best way to avoid a repeat was to limit my time with him. “Yeah, job is going well. Lucas is great.”

“Isn’t he? Truth be told, I was kind of hoping you two might hit it off.”

Good grief. Just because we were both single in a sea of happy couples, everyone wanted to set us up? “Why?”

She shrugged. “You both have terrific energy, like you’d have a lot of fun together. Chemistry, I suppose.”

Oh, boy, did we.

My brother walked in and dropped a kiss on Daisy’s cheek and another on Henry’s forehead. Never had I seen him look so at ease. “Who has chemistry?”

“I was hoping Lucas and Brooke would.”

His frown didn’t surprise me. He wouldn’t want to become involved in anyone else’s love life. But then he said, “I suppose they would. He’ll be over here shortly for dinner, right?”

“Yeah, but unfortunately I need to head home. Come next week I’ll be on call for nights, which means I need to get things sorted down there. When I return, I’ll look for temporary housing.” Although I enjoyed staying with Daisy and Caleb, I didn’t want to intrude for another five weeks.

His frown deepened. “We love having you here. Plenty of space.”

Daisy put her hand on mine. “Agreed. You’re welcome here as long as you’d like to stay.”

In that case, maybe I’d stay. “Thank you. And while I’m here, I’m happy to babysit anytime.”

Daisy smiled at her adorable son. “Hear that, Henry? You have the very best aunt.”

Caleb waited until his girlfriend had left the room to come over and whisper, “I need your help.”

“With what?” His tone sounded urgent.

“I’m hoping to propose to Daisy next weekend. Could you babysit one night?”

I was so excited for them. “Absolutely. I’ll check my on-call schedule and let you know which night works better.”

“Great. Thank you.”
