My first two days on the job by myself hadn’t been too bad. I’d fumbled a bit with lugging everything inside of the homes and had even managed to pull up to the wrong house more than once, but all in all I couldn’t complain. Admittedly, it had been exhausting. Yet at the end of my second solo shift, I wasn’t heading home. Nope. I intended to meet Daisy and her best friend Tory for drinks.

But first I needed to change out of the slacks and collared shirt I’d worn for my appointments. At the clinic restroom, I put on a black, one-shouldered jumpsuit with my favorite silver and black stilettos. After letting my hair down and donning red lipstick, I was ready to go. But I wasn’t ready to run into the one person I’d avoided the last few days.

“Hi,” Lucas said, his gaze roaming over my outfit like a warm caress.

“Hi. What brings you by the office this late?”

“Oh, I was turning in a urine sample from Myrna.”

“How is she? Feeling any better?” The woman had been sweet, and it was clear he was fond of her.

“No, the same. But with the exception of being a tad low on her iron, there’s nothing sticking out to explain her fatigue. I ordered a different round of tests, so we’ll see what they turn up. Her blood pressure is low, but that’s nothing new. I’ll go over there tomorrow morning to check in, make sure she’s hydrated and eating regular meals.”

The fact he was conversing with me about his patient as if he valued my opinion meant a lot. Mike had never done so. He’d thought being a surgeon made him above other physicians. “Checking for hydration is a good idea. Wonder if she’s having trouble sleeping. Maybe consuming caffeine?”

“She does drink tea, so it’s a good idea to check with her if it’s caffeinated. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” We both stood there until he took my arm and led me into the nearby office. After closing the door, he turned and locked his gaze on mine. “I owe you an apology for what happened the other day and the way I reacted to it.”

The kiss. The kiss that shall not be named. “It’s fine.”

He shook his head. “No, it’s not. I was angry I lost my head, and I took it out on you. It was completely uncalled for. And if I drove you from your brother’s house on Saturday night because of it—”

“No, I needed a chance to get things settled at my condo and to bring more of my personal items up here.”

He took his hands out of his pockets, but then shoved them back in as if he didn’t know what to do with them. “Okay. Good, I guess.”

“Back to being friends?”

He smirked, the action doing nothing to quell his hot factor. “The type with sex and any future spontaneous kissing off the table?”

“Yep. Completely off the table.” The way he stared at my lips did nothing to seal the promise. “Probably means you need to stop the steamy looks.”

His brows shot up. “Me? You’re the one who licked your lips.”

Had I? Clearly, my body had its own agenda. “Let’s just agree to—”

“Never look at one another again?”

I shook my head. “Could you be more mature about this?”

“Probably, but this is more fun.”

It was, and that was part of the problem.

He blew out a long breath. “I never got a chance to say thank you for what you said. About my work. It meant a lot.”

His sincerity made me swallow hard. “I meant every word.”

He suddenly moved to open the door. “I won’t keep you any longer. Have a hot date tonight?”

I wouldn’t read into why he was asking. “No. I’m meeting Daisy and her friend Tory for drinks.”

Was that relief in his expression, or was I merely projecting what I hoped to see?

“Have fun.”
