“I’m highly allergic, so I’m afraid I can’t take them home with me. Mom’s neighbor loves them like her own, but she’s out of town. She’ll be back on Monday night and would love to adopt them.”
Her husband put an arm around her. “Maybe we can board the dogs. Know of any local ones?”
The dogs were used to being pampered. The thought of putting them in a kennel didn’t sit well with me.
As soon as the coroner came out to talk with the couple, Lucas took me to the side.
“I don’t feel comfortable with them going to a kennel. These dogs have always had twenty-four-seven human connection.”
“I was thinking the same.”
“Maybe I could take them. Only problem is I have to work tomorrow until late afternoon.”
“I’m off tomorrow and home watching baby Henry all night.” Caleb was proposing to Daisy while they were off for a romantic night.
“I could watch them tonight, drop them off with you in the morning, then pick them up again once I’m off in the afternoon, so you’d only be doing double duty during the day. I’d then keep them through Monday until the neighbor arrives back.”
“Are you sure you’re able to take this on?” It was generous of him to offer, but it was a lot.
“Those dogs were Myrna’s world, and it would make me feel better to know they were in good hands.”
It was unbelievably sweet. As if I needed yet another reason to be attracted to the man.
