Brooke

Ihated the shake in my voice and prayed he didn’t pick up on it. Because, yes, I’d seen him with the touchy brunette. Yes, I’d witnessed him laughing at something she’d said. Yes, I’d been fucking jealous.

But I’d go to my grave before admitting it.

I’d come outside because my headhunter had called. I officially had an interview request from Bay Area Women’s Clinic up in San Francisco. It was an important step in a direction I couldn’t wait to go.

Happy for an excuse to turn my back on Lucas, I answered my phone when it rang again, this time with Meredith’s number. “Hello.”

“Hi, Brooke. I have a big favor to ask.” She sounded out of breath.

“Sure. Everything okay?”

“I’m in labor. And wouldn’t you know it’s the one night Dr. Simmons is out of town, and as previously—oh, shit.” She breathed through a contraction. “I won’t let Neil near my vagina.”

“Are you at the hospital?”

“On my way there now. I’m sorry. I realize this was your Friday night off.”

“It’s fine. Truly.” The party was half over, and Caleb and Daisy would understand. Only problem was I had no car as I’d taken an Uber.

“The baby is coming early, and I’m nervous.”

“I could tell you not to be nervous, but we both know it doesn’t work that way. So instead I’ll say we’ve seen this countless times, and I’ll do everything in my power to ensure you have a smooth delivery. I’m leaving now and will meet you at the hospital.” Good thing I’d only had one glass of wine this evening at the party.

“Thank you. I’ll meet you soon.”

When I turned around, Lucas was at the door reading his phone. “Andy texted Meredith is in labor.”

“Yeah, I’m heading to the hospital now.” I pulled up the Uber app, ready to type in the details.

“Is your car here?”

“No, but I’ll get a ride.”

“I can drive you.”

“No, thanks.”

“She’s my friend, and I’d be heading there anyhow. Please let me drive you.”

The last thing I wanted to do was get in a car with him, but he made a compelling case if he was on his way there anyhow.

“Fine. I need to say good night to Daisy and Caleb first.”

Ten minutes later we were in Lucas’ sports car on the way to Cedars Sinai hospital. The car was as sexy as he was, and I tried not to think about the fact he would’ve been driving the cute brunette home if not for the emergency.

The silence was deafening until he finally spoke. “I apologize for jumping to conclusions earlier.”

Despite the arrogance of his assumption, it hadn’t been wrong. I had been jealous. “It’s fine.”

“No, it’s not. You weren’t wrong; I was watching you across the room. After ignoring you for two weeks, I was gauging your reaction tonight. And then I jumped to the stupid conclusion you might be upset to see someone flirting with me.”

“Why did you ignore me?” The fact he’d done it purposefully hurt more than it should have.

“Because things felt off after our night together. Then after Myrna’s funeral, I was in a funk.”

He hadn’t sent me the details for the funeral, and I hadn’t pressed for them. Had that been a mistake? “I would’ve been there for you if you’d asked.”
