Vegas was just what I needed. A night out with my best friend in the most distracting place on earth. The club was on fire, and there was no shortage of men. Yet I found myself distracted by Lucas’ phone call. I hadn’t wanted a reminder of him tonight. Nope, I was here to dance my ass off and spend time with Addison as two single ladies in sin city.

“Who called?” Once she’d successfully led me to the bar, Addison handed me one of the two shots she’d ordered.

“Lucas.” Addison knew I’d gone to work with him and we’d decided to keep things in the friend zone.

“The one-night, hottest-sex-of-your-life Lucas?”

“Yeah.” I threw back the shot. “Although it’s technically two nights now.”

She choked on her liquor. “Shut up. Why didn’t you say anything? When did that happen?”

“Last night.” I winced when she lightly punched my arm.

“And you’re just now telling me?”

Dang, the hurt on her face made me feel guilty. “I meant to tell you later. Tonight I was hoping not to dwell on it.”

“Are you together?”

“No, no. We’re, um, friends, coworkers, and—”

“Lovers?”

“No, it was a lapse, I think.” Although I had little in the way of regret. “It’s not going to happen again.” Hadn’t that been the purpose of his phone call? To confirm I knew things hadn’t changed.

“But you wish it would happen again?”

“I only have three weeks left here, and I don’t want anything getting in the way of my next job.”

“Are you open to a relationship?”

Although I was hard pressed to admit it, Mike cheating on me had been a gift. Of course, the fact he’d cheated on me with my little sister was a bitter pill, but I certainly didn’t miss him or need time to get over him. Did that mean I was actually open to a relationship?

“I’m afraid of starting anything new and having it influence my career decisions.” If you couldn’t be honest with your best friend, who could you be honest with?

“I get it. You need to do you. Oh, and maybe the guy over to my left who can’t take his eyes off you.”

My gaze tracked to the tall, dark-haired man who raised his drink to me in silent toast when I met his gaze. He was handsome, yet nothing stirred inside me. Great. By sleeping with Lucas—again—I was ruined for all other men.

“You want to go over there and talk to him?” Addy asked.

“No, this is girls’ night. How about we go to the next club?” We had three on our agenda for tonight.

“Cool. Meantime, and don’t you dare laugh, I signed up with a matchmaker.”

“What? Why?” Addison was a beautiful woman, fully able to meet men on her own. A bit clumsy at times, but it was part of her charm.

“Because I want to get married and have kids.”

“Yeah, but what’s the hurry? You just moved to a new city and should be out enjoying it every night.” Where was this coming from? Why the rush?

She shrugged. “Guess when you know what you want, you know what you want.”

I let out a breath, biting back more questions about her urgency. Who the hell was I to talk? If she knew what she wanted to make her happy, then I should be supportive. “I prefer the idea of a matchmaker better than online dating. Someone vetting the men to ensure they’re on the same page as you.”

Her beaming smile proved I’d said the right thing. “I thought the same. Now, let’s get to the next club and dance our asses off.”
