Imeant every word. Brooke was a terrific doctor and would make a great addition to any practice. So what if the thought of her leaving made my stomach hurt? It wasn’t any of my business where she went.

Her beautiful eyes met mine. “Thank you.”

“It’s an important decision,” I added, pulling into the patient’s driveway.

“Yes, it is.”

Although the appointment was a routine checkup, Claudia Shadwick had expressed interest in starting a family, so I was glad I’d brought Brooke along. She was professional, approachable, and once again, I was struck by how incredibly knowledgeable she was.

“Will you be here next year? Or will it be Dr. Fitzpatrick?”

“It’ll be Dr. Fitzpatrick, but you’ll be in terrific hands.”

It was another reminder Brooke’s time with the practice was short. It occurred to me I’d been projecting my own feelings about our second night together on her. She wasn’t the one acting strange. I was. I was the one overthinking the whole deal. I was the one who couldn’t get her off my mind. And now time was running short. Which maybe wasn’t a bad thing?

We were quiet as we got back into my SUV and left Claudia’s house. Finally, my inner tension got to me, and I pulled over to the side of the road. I didn’t want to have this conversation in the clinic parking lot.

“What are you doing?” she questioned, watching me put the SUV in park.

“I—” Turning toward her, I sucked in a breath when she also turned toward me. Suddenly, we were only inches apart. Unable to help myself, I framed her face with my hands, bringing our foreheads together. “Your friendship means something to me.” Regretful, I let go of her so I wouldn’t kiss her.

She expelled a long sigh. “Your friendship means something to me too. Guess I should apologize for starting things on Friday.”

I shook my head, putting the car back in drive. “You might have kissed me first, but if you hadn’t, I would have kissed you. Guess it was building for a while.”

“Good thing we got it out of our system, then.”

Had we? It sure as hell didn’t feel that way. “Yeah, good thing.”
