By Friday evening I was beat. Three late-night deliveries during the week had made for little sleep.

Since Caleb, Daisy, and baby Henry were out of town for the weekend, I had the house to myself. After taking a shower, I put on shorts and a tank top, sans bra, and went to chill in the backyard with a glass of white wine. I could see why this was Caleb’s favorite spot. It didn’t feel like I was in the city but rather in my own oasis. I was about to order food when the phone rang in my hand.

Lucas.

Between our busy schedules, we hadn’t seen each another since Tuesday.

“Hello.” I winced when I realized I’d answered after the first ring. Rookie move.

“Hi. What are you up to?”

Damn. His gravelly voice did something to me. “I have the house to myself, so I’m drinking wine braless in the backyard and about to order a pizza.”

He sucked in a breath, and I internally cursed myself for offering up too much information. “Sorry, blame my lack of filter on the wine and lack of sleep.”

“I heard about the birth last night. Not an easy one, I take it?”

No, it hadn’t been. Especially on the mother, who’d experienced eighteen hours of labor. “No, it wasn’t easy, and I had a total of three late-night deliveries this week.”

“Where’s your brother and Daisy?”

“House hunting in the Santa Barbara area with the baby.”

“I didn’t realize they were looking to move.”

“Yeah. They want more property and a bigger house. Chickens were mentioned.”

He chuckled. “Daisy, I can see with chickens. Caleb, well, I’d pay to see him with chickens.”

“Yeah, me too.” But he was crazy enough about Daisy there’d undoubtedly be a menagerie of animals before long. They were embarking on the next chapter of their lives. Although I could never see myself trading the city life for gathering eggs and planting a garden, I could appreciate their excitement over a change of pace. “How was your week?”

“Busy. On top of my regular schedule, I had two emergency calls. One for stitches and the other for the flu.”

“Tell me about them?”

As he went into detail regarding his two extra calls, I found myself relaxing. Maybe I could do this friendship thing, after all.

“What do you think about me bringing the pizza?”

So much for friendship; my nipples were already getting hard. “That would depend.”

“On?”

“On whether I need to put a bra back on.”

He chuckled. “It would be a shame to do so.”

“Wouldn’t it?”

“Guess we shouldn’t pretend I’d only be coming over to deliver a pizza.”

“No, we shouldn’t.”

He let out an audible sigh. “I’ve been thinking.”

“Uh-oh.”
