This was new territory for me. A sexual relationship with a woman who was also a part of my personal and professional life. Then again, so was having a woman on my mind day and night, completely unable to get her out of my system.

It should have eased my mind to know she was leaving in two weeks. There was a solid end to this. We were automatically on the same page, understanding this was going nowhere. Yet at the same time, it made me sad to know she was leaving. If I could allow myself to believe in happily ever after, Brooke was a woman I could see myself with there. But no use in traveling down that road again of pretending I believed in forever with someone.

I’d once before thought I could put aside my beliefs about the transitory nature of love. It hadn’t been possible. In the end, I’d been dreadfully unfair to my ex-wife. It was funny how my perspective had shifted over the last few weeks. From hating her with every fiber for cheating on me, I’d gone to recognizing my part in driving her into someone else’s arms. Did I still think it was shitty she’d lied and gone behind my back? Absolutely. But I’d also started to take responsibility for my part in the end of the marriage.

After knocking on Caleb’s front door, I waited for Brooke to answer. Nothing. I rang the doorbell next, but still nothing. I tried the door and frowned to find it unlocked.

“Brooke?” I called out as I walked inside.

Silence. Remembering she’d mentioned being in the backyard, I locked the door behind me and walked through the house and outside to the patio.

She was asleep in the Adirondack chair looking like a fucking goddess. Stunning in slumber, with her hair up in a messy bun and her braless chest rising and falling with each breath.

Quietly sitting down in the chair beside her, I balanced the warm pizza boxes on my lap and opened the top one, waving the steam in her direction.

Her eyes snapped open. “Are you eating my pizza?”

I chuckled at her reaction. “Wouldn’t dream of it, Sleeping Beauty.”

“Sleeping Beauty was awakened with a kiss.”

I leaned over to kiss her lips slowly, loving the way she sighed in pleasure. “Better?”

“Much better.” She sat up, and I could hardly keep from staring at her tits, which were gloriously defined by the small tank top.

“Ah, but the question becomes which do you choose? The prince or the pizza?”

A smirk curved her lips, and she didn’t hesitate to grab the pizza box.

“Ouch.” I feigned offense as I watched her take a slice out and bite into it.

“See, the best part about being your friend is I don’t have to worry about offending you with my choices.”

I laughed, agreeing fully. It certainly did take the pressure off. “And the best thing about being your friend is I don’t have to worry about offending you when I tell you to lock your damn front door next time. This is LA. Don’t be leaving things unlocked.”

She held up her slice in mock cheers. “Noted.”

Opening my box, I took out my own slice, moving to touch it to hers in a pizza toast when she recoiled.

“No touching your contaminated pizza with mine.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Fruit on pizza is sacrilege.”

It was my favorite. “Pineapple and ham is delicious on pizza.”

“Agree to disagree. Strongly.”

“Perhaps it’s a plan to ensure you don’t steal any of my pizza.”

“Mission accomplished. You want a beer? Caleb has some in the refrigerator out here. Or I have more wine.”

“I’ll grab a beer.” I got up to fetch one from the fridge and as I sat back down watched in appreciation as she unabashedly enjoyed her pizza. “Good?”

“Delicious. Thanks for bringing it by.”
