“Do you want me to drive?” I asked Saturday afternoon. Brooke had come out the front door and, bag in hand, was frowning at my Lexus pulled into Caleb’s driveway.

She was in a pink floral dress showing off her legs and arms and making me anxious to have her beneath me. So much for fucking her out of my system. I only found myself craving more.

She scrunched her beautiful face. “Did you take the sports car to your appointments today?”

“I did. I thought it might be fun to take it down the freeway.”

“More important question. Are you the type of guy who insists on driving everywhere?”

“Not at all.”

“You’ll let me drive your pretty sports car?”

I tossed her the keys and watched her face light up at the action.

After putting her bag in the back, I slid into my own passenger seat. I waited for panic to seize me over the fact we were going to spend another night together, but it didn’t.

Friends with benefits made weekend plans together, right? Hell if I knew the official rules, but it had to include spending time together. And since we didn’t have much left, I was taking the opportunity to do just that.

Even if I took her at her word about this being casual, it wasn’t rocket science to figure out the longer we did this, the harder it would be to get out and move on. So the plan was to enjoy the next two weeks as friends with benefits.

If she was having relationshippy thoughts about my spending the weekend with her, she didn’t show it. In fact we chatted about our weeks more like colleagues than lovers. But then I couldn’t resist diving more into the personal side.

“Did you always want to be a doctor?” I enjoyed staring at her profile as she navigated traffic on the south-bound freeway.

She frowned. “Becoming a doctor was always expected of me because of my mother. I suppose I never thought about another option. But I enjoy it now, so it’s hard to be resentful.”

“And Caleb had to become an attorney because your father was?”

“Precisely.”

“And your younger sister?”

She shrugged. “I suppose once my parents had two offspring following in their footsteps, they no longer cared what the third child accomplished. Caleb and I were shipped off to boarding schools in elementary school. Bethany wasn’t. Could also be the timing. My brother and I were born while they were climbing the ladders in their professions, whereas Bethany came along eight years later, after they’d accomplished their goals and had more free time.”

Although Brooke managed to keep the hurt out of her voice, there was no doubt her childhood had been tough.

She returned the question. “How about you? What made you want to become a doctor?”

“I’ve always loved helping people and found it easy to talk to them, so combine those things with being good in science, and I’d found the career for me. It’s been an investment, but one I don’t regret.”

The thing most people didn’t appreciate about doctors was the number of hours it took to be one, even after all the years of medical school.

“Where did you grow up?”

“All over. Military brat which means I spent time all over the country and a few years in Germany.”

“Any great memories of your travels?”

“Germany was fun. I was there from ages seven to ten, and we toured some incredible castles and got to travel around Europe. My first stepmom, Marie, was German, so she spoke the language and immersed us in local culture.” I hated the recollection of how painful it had been to come home from school and find her gone. She’d simply vanished, without a note or an apparent care for the boy she’d helped raise for three years. “Anyhow, those few years were nice.”

“Did you keep in touch with your stepmom?”

I barked out a dry laugh. “Which one?”

Her eyes got big, causing me to amend. “No, I didn’t keep in touch with any of them.”
