He grabbed his medical bag from the hall closet. “You should have everything you need in there. Let me run upstairs to change and then I’ll be down shortly.”

“I feel bad spoiling your evening together,” Kendall apologized as I gathered items from the bag.

“You didn’t at all. What good is having a neighbor who’s a doctor if you can’t set your mind at ease with a quick checkup?”

She took a seat in the leather chair while I took out the pressure cuff and stethoscope. I measured her blood pressure first. “Your BP is good.”

Next I took out the blood sugar kit, but was distracted when Lucas came down the stairs, hair still wet and fresh clothes on.

A chime sounded, detouring him to the front door. “Ah, I wondered when you’d be by.”

A handsome man with an adorable baby in a sling attached to his chest walked through the door. “You know me. I worry. Oh, I didn’t realize you had company.”

If there was ever any doubt Lucas didn’t have women over at his house, his neighbors’ reactions to my presence quashed them. “Hi, I’m Brooke.”

Kendall made the introductions. “Dr. Brooke. She’s an obstetrician. And these two men in my life are Liam and Charlie. Charlie being the one with the pacifier in his mouth.”

“Nice to meet you,” Liam said, laughing when Charlie reached for Lucas.

He didn’t hesitate to take him. “Hey, little man, come see your favorite neighbor.”

Oh, Lord. After seeing Lucas with my nephew, you’d think I’d have been prepared for the onslaught of emotions when he interacted with baby Charlie. Ovaries exploding, I did my best to focus on my patient. To put her at ease while I pricked her finger for blood, I asked, “How old is Charlie?”

“Eleven months. We hadn’t planned on having the babies this close, but let’s just say we’ve become experts in unplanned pregnancy. This one is a girl.”

“Congratulations.”

“Thank you. So, do you and Lucas work together?”

“Yes. I’m filling in for Dr. Fitzgerald temporarily.”

“She’ll be moving to San Francisco soon,” Lucas added as if he needed to put it out there.

“We’ll see. I have an interview tomorrow.”

“Is there a chance you’d stay in LA?” Kendall inquired.

It was an innocent question, yet I could feel the weight of Lucas’ gaze on me. “I’m looking all over California, so LA is certainly a possibility.”

Her blood sugar tested normal, but her iron did not. “You’re low on iron, Kendall. Could be the culprit in causing your lightheadedness. Are you experiencing fatigue?”

She sighed. “Yes, but I figured it was being pregnant and having an eleven-month-old.”

“I’ll take the next few days off and watch Charlie while you get some rest,” Liam offered.

“No, no, I only need to take supplements, and I’ll be good, right?”

“Yes, you should definitely take iron supplements, but also eat iron-rich foods like spinach, squash, or pumpkin seeds. You could additionally try lean cuts of red meat.”

Liam, came over to rub his wife’s back. “I’ll go shopping tonight and get you whatever sounds good along with iron supplements.”

“You should see improvement in a few days, but if you don’t, let your OB know so they can do further tests. Also ensure you increase your fiber and water with the iron supplements.”

“Thank you. Thank you both.”

Kendall stood slowly with her husband coming over to give her a hand. She turned toward Lucas. “Glad I came over. There’s a chicken pot pie in your freezer. Thaw overnight, put in the oven at three fifty for thirty minutes when you’re ready to eat it.”

Lucas handed over the baby. “I look forward to it. Thank you.”

“It was really nice to meet you, Brooke,” Kendall called out, walking toward the door.

“You too.”

I put the medical equipment back in the bag while Lucas saw them to the door. As soon as he stepped back into the living room, I expected the question about me possibly staying in LA.

It was my career and therefore my business. Although I hoped the interview went smoothly tomorrow, there was no telling. I wasn’t about to limit my options because of his issues.

But he surprised me.

“Interest you in a glass of wine?”
