Iquickly went about making sure everything was in place. A text to my neighbor Liam had him appear with the basket full of desserts his wife had baked me especially for tonight.

“Kendall says good luck.”

“Thanks. If her éclairs can’t get Brooke to give me a chance, nothing will.”

“I have a feeling you’ll be fine even without them.” He patted me on the shoulder before walking back to his house.

Given what had transpired on the way over here, I had a good deal of hope. Jesus, that had been the hottest sex of my entire life. Which was saying a lot considering how incredible sex had been with Brooke thus far.

I glanced toward the garage, watching for her to emerge. I had it all set up. Solar twinkle lights hung from the rafters of the balcony above and torch lights outlined the corners of the wooden bench. My romantic gesture for telling Brooke I was in love with her and wanted a future with her centered around this bench. It’s where I hoped to talk about our future together. Where I wanted to talk to her on the phone every night while she was gone, and I was wishing like hell I could join her there.

But I couldn’t simply head off to Haiti. Not if I were to open my own practice, transitioning my patients into it over the next few months. One more thing to tell her all about.

What was taking her so long? Deciding to go inside to check on her, I found the bathroom door open but no Brooke. There wasn’t even a sign she’d ever been in the house. I went up the stairs and searched the entire place. Still nothing.

Taking out my phone to call her, I read the text she’d sent.

“I’m sorry, Lucas. Tonight was wonderful, but it was too much on my heart to keep things casual. Wishing you all the best. B.”

Son of a bitch. She’d incorrectly assumed all I’d wanted was sex on the eve of her departure. I’d blown it. It was tempting to chase after her, but I needed to figure out how to up my game first.
