Isucked in a breath at her confession, relief hitting me over hearing she loved me too.

“Lucky guy. He’s even luckier you didn’t sleep with the waiter, given your track record for failing at one-night stands.”

She shook her head, laughing.

As soon as the elevator doors opened, I took her hand and led her to my room. I enjoyed the disbelief on her face when she walked in to see Whataburger already on the dining table.

“You have this seduction thing down, don’t you?”

I was sure most women wouldn’t appreciate fast food to the point of getting seduced. “More like knowing the way to a particular woman’s heart. Eat up.”

As much as I wanted to rip off the black dress she was wearing and fuck her to the point she could never sneak out on me again, the anticipation was intoxicating. Not unlike our first night together.

“Where should I sit?” Grabbing a burger, she began seductively unwrapping it.

“I feel like if I say ‘my face,’ it might come off too strong this early in the evening, so how does my lap sound?”

Her giggle was contagious. “Seems safe yet a tad disappointing if I’m being honest.”

I took a seat in one of the chairs and pulled her onto my lap. Her groan after the first bite of her burger made my cock stand up and take notice. “I swear, you eating fast-food burgers could be a porn soundtrack.”

“Mm, if this doctor thing doesn’t work out, I’ll keep it in mind. So tell me, stranger whose name I didn’t quite get at the bar but decided to go up to your room anyhow, what brings you to town?”

My lips twitched. “I came to tell the woman of my dreams I want a future with her.”

She cocked a brow. “You don’t seem the type to believe in happily ever after.”

“You’re right, I wasn’t. But that was before she helped me realize I was scared. Scared to be all in and let myself believe there was such a thing as true love. I tried to tell her a few days ago by inviting myself to her last dinner with her family and then taking her to my place where I had set up a romantic scene, but she snuck out on me.”

“What did it look like, this romantic scene?”

“Twinkle lights, dessert, and a special bench a patient left me in her will. Myrna, that was her name, said it was the bench where she and her husband planned and discussed their lives. Thing was, as soon as I sat down on it, I realized a future without someone to love was no future at all.”

Her eyes got misty. “It sounds lovely. I’m sure she’s sorry she snuck out.”

“It’s my fault. I should’ve given her an indication I wanted more than one last night. I’m here in Houston trying to up my game to win her back.”

“She’s a lucky girl.” Finished with her burger, she looped her arms around my neck.

“Eh, she might not think so when she hears I quit my job.”

“You quit your job?”

Her shocked expression. “Yes. It’ll take a while to transition fully and open up my own practice. That’s why I can’t join her on her next adventure. But I’m hoping we can do long distance over the next three months. I’m looking forward to some really hot phone sex.”

“Could be a lot of fun.”

Her laughter shifted to a squeal when I stood up, taking her with me. I carried her to the bed and laid us both down, with me bracing myself on either side of her head with my forearms. “Hi.”

“Hi.”

“Just so we’re clear because I don’t want to get this wrong again, I love you, Brooke.”

Her lips curved into a sexy smile. “Just so we’re clear, I love you too, Lucas.”

“Took you long enough,” I teased, dipping my head and kissing her neck.
