Darin follows a slight distance behind her. “Thanks, man.” He puts a hand on my shoulder, leaning closer so only I can hear him. “That seemed to go really well. I think Vanessa and I are making progress.”

I clap him on the back. “Of course, Darin. You know I love you like a brother and want you to be happy. And from all I’ve seen, Vanessa makes you really happy.”

His green eyes twinkle, his white teeth gleaming beneath the lights of the coffee shop. “Yes, she does. She asked me if I’d go with her to the Halloween party tonight.” He steps through the door and I follow him, closing it behind me.

“That’s a good start.” My gaze roves over to Irelynn, who faces Vanessa, talking quietly. Both have smiles on their faces. I nudge Darin, nodding my head in their direction. His smile widens as Vanessa looks over at him, her soft smile growing.

Yup. This was a good move. I’m glad to see my best bud happy again.

Darin and I move to Vanessa and Irelynn. I wrap my arm around Irelynn’s shoulders, squeezing her against me. Looking over, I see Darin has Vanessa’s hand clasped in his. The four of us fall in step together, our feet crunching over the brown leaves on the sidewalk. Beside me, Irelynn shivers slightly, burrowing into her coat. Rubbing my hand down the sleeve of her jacket, I pull her tighter against me. She immediately snuggles against my warm body. My temperature always runs a few degrees warmer than hers.

We part at our respective vehicles and Vanessa promises to text Irelynn later. She gives her a wink as they hug, then Irelynn steps back beside me.

Darin looks over at me. “I’ll text you later, lover.” He acts like he’s going to give me a kiss on the cheek, but I punch his shoulder, stopping him. Laughing loudly, he shakes his head as I give him the middle finger.

“Don’t make me knock you out, asshole.”

He rolls his eyes. “You’re cranky. Maybe you need a good blowjob.”

Now it’s my turn to laugh. “Already had one of those tonight. And probably another one later.”

Darin holds up his hands, backing toward his Jeep. “Say no more.” His gaze moves to Irelynn. “Later, shortie. Let me know when Max is making fettuccine alfredo and I’ll drop by.”

She laughs. “As if I’d forget. You’d never let me live it down if I did.” Irelynn leans against me and jokes, “He’s such a mooch.”

I can’t help but laugh, happiness filling me. It’s good to hang out with our best friends again, and not have any drama for once. We’ve had our share of it, and I’m hoping we can get back to the way things were in September, when life was more relaxed and carefree.

But I know that’s not a reality. Not without knowing if William will leave us alone. And with Damian still out there… my eyes scan the parking lot, then move to the street. I draw in a breath as I spot William’s black BMW. He puts his window down, holding up his coffee cup, and simply nods at me. We stare at one another and oddly, I don’t see any type of threatening look on his face. It’s as though he’s simply watching us from afar.

My gaze slides to Darin, but he hasn’t noticed William. He’s holding Vanessa’s door open, saying something to her as she slides behind the steering wheel.Damn.I’d like to see what his reaction is. But I don’t know how to draw his attention to William without alerting Irelynn. She’s too busy watching her friends, her face lit up with happiness.

I’m sure as hell not going to spoil her joy. She’s had more than enough misery lately.

My gaze slides back to him. William’s gaze flits around, taking in our surroundings, then locks with mine. He calmly sips his coffee, then breaks eye contact as a car drives down the road. He stares at them intently, his posture tense. Once they pass, I see him visibly relax.

The second Irelynn’s gaze moves to mine, I focus on her. “Ready, baby.”

“Of course.” She looks over at Vanessa and Darin, a smile on her face. “That seemed to go well.”

Leaning into her, I kiss her cheek. “Yes, it did. They are heading in the right direction. Tonight’s party should push them along even more.” Squeezing her hand so she turns her attention back to me, I push a lock of her hair from her face, the wind picking up. Studying her intently with concern, my voice is low and gentle. “Are you sure you don’t want to go?”

Her face softens as she moves her fingers lightly over my concerned brow. “Yes, I am. I’d much rather spend a quiet evening with you.” Her other hand gently traces over my dick in my sweatpants. “Or maybe a not so quiet evening.” She winks at me as I release a low growl, my lips moving to her neck, kissing and sucking her soft skin, breathing her in.

Pulling back, I step over to my Jeep, opening the passenger door for her. “Your chariot awaits, madam.”

Irelynn giggles, kissing me on the cheek and climbing inside. I pinch her tight little ass before she sits down. Shaking her head, she blows me a kiss as I shut the door.

Walking around the back of my Jeep, I meet William’s eyes. There’s a slight wistfulness in them as he nods his head. I give him a small smile, then head to the driver’s side. It feels like he just conceded, knowing he can’t have her, yet still watching over her. Because I know damned well he isn’t concerned for my safety.

Climbing inside my Jeep, I hurriedly start the engine, turning the heat on to warm her up. She thanks me, holding her hands up to the vents. “Geez, the temperature really dropped tonight. That wind sucks.”

Good. She still hasn’t noticed William.

“Yes, it did. I’ll warm you up as soon as we get home.” I wink at her before backing out of my parking space, following Darin’s Jeep out of the parking lot. “Feel like a Halloween movie marathon tonight?”

Her head turns to mine, a smile on her face. “But of course, my love. I was just going to ask you the same thing.” She rubs her hands together in front of the vents, then lowers her left hand to my leg. “It’s like you can read my mind.”

As I turn onto the street, I glance in William’s direction, wondering if he will follow us home. I get my answer when I notice him in the rearview mirror, keeping a careful distance behind us. If you weren’t paying attention, you wouldn’t know he’s there.
