Out of the corner of my eye, I see Damian frown, his knuckles white as they tighten around the gun. His face turns red as he grimaces, his hard eyes boring into Gregory.
Gregory notices Damian’s reaction because his demeanor quickly shifts and he pastes a large, fake smile on his face. “But I have one son who isn’t a huge fucking disappointment.” He nods in Damian’s direction. “Damian is powerful and vindictive. A true man. He will be a great leader of my empire.”
I watch him preen as he basks in his father’s approval, making me feel sick. Taking advantage of his distraction, my gaze lands on my gun, calculating how long it would take me to get to it and if I could do it before getting riddled with bullets.
Irelynn’s voice rings with conviction. “William isn’t a disappointment. You should be proud of the man he really is, instead of the insensitive, arrogant asshole you tried to turn him into.”
Gregory yanks on her hair, making her yelp, as his face mottles from rage. His lips pull back, baring his teeth. Spittle builds up in the corners of his mouth as he seethes, “You are delusional, little girl. He played you like a fool, simply because he wanted to fuck you. But you have no idea who he really is.”
Damian’s cold eyes meet mine. “She may be lying to you, hero.” His smile is smug as he tries to twist the knife in my heart. “Maybe she fucked my brother and that’s why he became her little lapdog, following her around like a little bitch in heat. Who knows? They may be playing you.”
He and Gregory begin laughing, the sound crawling through my skin like red ants, biting and burning me from within.
Irelynn’s voice is enraged as she lunges toward Damian so hard that Gregory’s body is tugged forward. He rebounds quickly, shoving the gun into her temple.
But that doesn’t stop my girl.
“I’d never fucking lie to Max. I love him and am completely loyal to him.” Her eyes burn with passion and devotion, before they change, darkening with her rage as she turns her head toward Damian, her voice dripping with disdain. “You only wish you could be half the man William is. But the truth of the matter is he isn’t anyone’s lapdog, not even his father’s. And you both hate it. Jealousy eats at you because you can’t stand to watch him be successful on his own. He doesn’t need your money or your help. William is more successful than either of you will ever be.”
Crack.
Gregory whirls her around and smacks her across the face, the sound making my body jerk like I’d been shot. I growl, rage filling me, as I get on all fours, crawling toward Gregory to beat the shit out of him.
Damian’s foot connecting with my ribs stops me in my tracks as I fall to the floor, unable to breathe from the pain.
“You need to watch this hero.” He grabs my hair, yanking my head up. Tears fill my eyes as Gregory spins her around so I can see the red mark on her cheek.
He looms over Irelynn, making her extremities shake from her terror. She struggles against him with everything she has, trying to get him to loosen his grip, to no avail.
“I’m gonna strip you naked, then tie you up and fuck you so hard you’ll scream. And then I’ll let my son do the same after he shoots you in the arms and legs.” His smile is full of evil, vile and inhuman, as he leers at her, excitement pulsating from his body. He squeezes her arm harder, making her cry out in pain. “After that, Damian will put matching bullets in your boyfriend too. But don’t fret, we’ll keep him alive, so he can watch as we fuck you, over and over again. When we are finished, we’ll leave your broken bodies here to slowly bleed out and die—”
From out of nowhere, William appears behind Gregory. “Wrong, motherfucker. You’re not touching her.”
As Gregory spins around, William punches him in the face, causing him to lose his grip on Irelynn. Before she falls, William catches her, steadying her.
I hear her relieved voice say, “Will. Thank God you’re here.” He nods at her and then pushes her behind him as he looms over his father, kicking him in the ribs.
While this is going on, Damian is momentarily stunned and distracted. Before I can move, William’s guy punches him, sending him to the floor. I immediately tackle Damian, adrenaline and pure rage taking over as I punch him over and over again. Grabbing his gun from him, I smack him with the butt of it, then continue unleashing my fury as I lose all control.
Pausing, I look up and the guy who I’ve seen with William nods at me. “I’m Bryan. I’m going to check on your friends.”
Nodding, I watch as he heads to Darin before I resume my assault on Damian.
When I no longer feel him fighting, I slowly get to my feet, my eyes searching for her.
Her eyes lock with mine as she stands at a safe distance behind William, who looms over his father’s body on the floor. William’s foot lifts, kicking his father in the ribs.
I take one step toward her, wanting to make sure she’s okay, but pain infiltrates my body as Damian hurdles against me, punching me in the nuts. I gasp, falling to the floor, trying to breathe through the pain.
He doesn’t get a chance to hit me again as William runs over to him, punching him in the face several times, then kicking him in the ribs, over and over. “You’re weak motherfucker,” William hisses, slowly circling him, toying with him like a snake coiled and ready to strike its prey. “How dare you insult me, you worthless piece of shit.” He kicks him again, so he falls flat on his back, then grinds his foot into his dick. “And fucking threatening to rape her? We’ll never fucking let either of you assholes touch her again.” His gaze moves to mine as he says that, then he kicks Damian in the head.
Breathing heavily, he walks over to me. He holds a gun in his hand, but it’s trained on Damian, not me. He holds out a hand. “You okay, hero?”
My fingers lock around his and I stand, nodding. “I’ve been better. But I’m okay.”
Damian groans, rolling over, coughing and spitting out blood. William and I stand there in silence, watching him. After several beats, Damian turns his head toward us.
“You’re both pathetic saps.”
