Gregory groans, holding his head. He gives Damian a scathing look. “Of course I didn’t, you dumb bastard. You served your purpose, but you don’t have what it takes to run my empire. I played you, just like I played your stupid fucking whore of a mother.”

Before any of us can react, Damian grabs his gun and fires off two shots, hitting Gregory, who slumps over, blood pouring from his body. Then he turns, pointing his gun at William, but before he can pull the trigger, William shoots him first.

Damian slumps over, blood pouring from his wounds as he moans in pain, then grows still.

Luckily, Damian’s shot missed William entirely and hit the roof. William kicks the gun away from Damian’s hands, then heads to us.

Silence descends over the warehouse as we sit there, injured and stunned.

William meets my gaze, remorse in his light blue eyes. He gives me the faintest hint of a smile. “Well, at least they won’t be bothering you guys anymore.”

I nod, gratitude in my gaze as I glance at Damian, then at William. “Thank you.”

He nods, his attention diverted as the wail of the sirens pierce the night air. “It’s about fucking time,” William mutters, leaning down and patting me on the shoulder. “I’ll make sure Irelynn gets a private room and you’ll be able to stay in it with her.” He studies my face. “Please get checked out. You’re bleeding and I can tell you’re favoring your ribs.”

I nod. “Thanks, Will. Irelynn is my priority. But yeah, I will let them check over me.”

His head raises to Vanessa and Darin. “I’ll get a private room so the two of them can be together as well. And all expenses will be covered by me.”

I hear Irelynn gasp slightly from his words. I hold up my hand. “You don’t have to do that. I have money.”

His gaze moves to mine. “I know you do. But it’s the least I can do for the four of you after all the hell you’ve been through.” He lowers his head, remorse on his face. When he raises his head, he releases a long, painful sigh. “I’m really sorry. About everything.”

My eyes lock with Irelynn’s and she nods. I speak for both of us when I put my hand on his shoulder. “Apology accepted, Will.”

William nods, a smile forming on his lips. He stands, then hurries outside. A few minutes later, there’s a flurry of activity as emergency personnel rush through the door. William is in the lead, directing people where they need to go.

As emergency personnel run toward us with a stretcher, I stand with Irelynn in my arms. Lowering her to the stretcher, I see the panic in her eyes as they strap her to it. Gripping her hand tightly, I say, “I’m not leaving you, baby. I’m here every step of the way.” Wincing as I lean over, I give her a kiss on her forehead, smoothing the hair away from her face.

One of the EMTs puts a restraining hand on my shoulder. “I’m sorry sir, but—”

“I’m fucking going with her.” My teeth are gritted as I enunciate each word, rage pouring from my gaze.

“Sir, the policy is—”

William rushes over, putting his hand on the EMT. “Max is going wherever Irelynn goes. Period.” Glaring at the man who is giving me difficulties, William’s tone is cold and threatening as he says, “Argue with him one more time and I’ll fucking have you fired and you’ll never get a job in this town, or anywhere within this state. Do you understand me?”

The EMT gulps and nods frantically, his eyes downcast. “Yes, Mr. Anderson. My sincere apologies.”

“Don’t apologize to me.” William points at me. “Apologize to Max. And to Irelynn, for the unnecessary stress you are causing them. They’ve been through hell tonight, jackass. They don’t need your fucking grief.”

As the EMT apologizes profusely, I stare at William with newfound respect and admiration. “Thanks, Will. I appreciate it.”

He grins at me. “It’s the least I can do.”

He pats Irelynn’s hand before he hurries over, checking on Darin and Vanessa.

My lips are against her ear as I nod in William’s direction. “I never thought I’d say this. But I actually like that guy.”

“Shocking, huh?” She laughs, then winces from pain. “Sometimes people are full of surprises.”

Meeting her eyes, I give her a tender kiss. “Sometimes they are.”
