My heart pounds as I pull off my jacket and shirt, showing her the tattoo that covers the scars on my chest. Her fingers glide reverently over it, her smile letting me know it’s the best present I could have given her.

She has a soft smile on her face as she says, “It’s ironic. Because I have a gift for you. And I think it perfectly symbolizes the love and connection we share that defies logic.” Slowly pulling the strap of her dress to the side, I stare in awe at her tattoo. It’s a beautiful red rose, covering the scar from when she took the bullet meant for me.

My fingers trace over her soft, ivory skin, gliding over our initials, my heart squeezing inside my chest. Clearing my throat, I gaze into her eyes.

“We were destined to be together, beautiful. This proves we have a bond that can never be severed.”

It was our shared fate that brought us together under the worst of circumstances. In the darkest of times, our love bloomed. Sometimes, the thorns cut us and made us bleed. But like the rose, we persisted, growing stronger together, reaching for the light, resisting anyone and anything that tried to extinguish our love.

Pulling her against my chest, our heads automatically turn at the same time, watching as the sun slips over the horizon, bathing the sky in fiery reds and deep shades of violet.

Her words come out as a long sigh. “I love you, now and forever, Maxwell Hugh Devlin.”

“And I love you, forever and always, Irelynn Rose Devlin.”
