Please let me fool the devil.

“Well, what can I say to that?” He moves toward me, muscles relaxing, face and eyes softening as a smile pulls his lips up. “I’m thrilled to see you, gorgeous.” His hands slide around my waist, and I step into him, hatred curling inside my gut from having to play a role I never wanted to be cast in.

I’m doing my best not to recoil from his touch. For my face not to betray my true feelings of disgust toward him.

His hands slip around my back, pulling me against his lean, muscular body. He lowers his face to the side of my face, his warm breaths flowing across my ear. Apprehension grips me from pretending to care about him. But I don’t. Not like he wants me to. I push it away as Max’s handsome face fills my head. I’m desperate to get back to him, and this is the only way.

He inhales my scent as I slide my arms around his neck, a reverent exhale escaping him and falling across my skin. “This is all I’ve ever wanted, Irelynn.”

Fuck. A twinge of guilt courses through me, but I push it aside, grit stiffening my spine.Stick with the plan, Irelynn. No softening now.

My hands are sweaty as I slide the syringe lower so the tip of the needle sticks out further between my fingers. Turning my head so my lips are against his ear, I whisper, “You know, all I’ve ever wanted…” My hand slides away from the back of his neck. With lightning speed, I ram the needle into the side of his neck, my fingers on the syringe, injecting him with everything inside it. “Is to be with Max. But you viciously yanked me from him.”

With wide eyes, William steps back, his hand raised to his throat. An intense cold stare shoots from his icy blue eyes as his spine goes so stiff he appears to grow taller, anger taking root in him like a fast-growing weed.

“What the fuck did you do?” His voice booms across the room, a deep, ominous scream that makes me shrink back. His voice is so full of fury that spittle gathers in the corners of his mouth and flies across the space between us. His face purple with his rage.

Terror grips me and I can’t move… at first. Self-preservation kicks in as my brain starts functioning, screaming at me to get the hell out of here. Whirling, I dash toward the door but William leaps in front of it, unadulterated malice in his eyes.

Fuck, he’s going to kill me. I hope whatever I injected him with starts working.

My eyes are on the entranceway he’s blocking, but from my peripheral vision, I spot another door across the room from his desk. Bounding toward it, my sweaty fingers grip the knob and tug it open. Dashing inside, I don’t even bother looking around as I slam the door shut, locking it behind me. My breathing rasps from my lungs, the sweat pouring from my body and soaking my nightgown. My hand impatiently draws up to my forehead, wiping it. I force my breathing to quiet as I spin around, prepared to search for a weapon.

Instead, I freeze, my eyes wide from shock as a loud gasp tears from my lips. “Max!”

Max’s injured, broken body lies on a hospital bed, various medical equipment hooked to him.

His baby blues open, locking on mine. “Irelynn?” His voice is weak, yet relieved as I dart over to him, gently touching the skin not covered by bandages.

William’s fists pound on the door and my eyes move to it, then back to Max as his hand winds around me, his face contorted in pain. Tears flow down my face as I stare at the man I love with all of me. My fingers gently glide over his jawline, my eyes soft and full of all the love I feel for him.

“I love you with every damn broken piece of me,” he rasps, his voice weak.

“I love you with everything I am, Max.” Not able to hold back one second longer, I lean over him, hugging him gently, his familiar scent washing over me.

He feels like home. Like my forever.

Squeezing my eyes shut, I bask in the bliss that engulfs us. I know it’s fleeting, but I have to take the moment in case…no, I can’t even fathom it.

“I’m going to do whatever I can to get you the fuck out of here.” My teeth and hands clench, determination filling me.

Pulling back, I scan the room as he grabs my hand, drawing my attention to him.

“Be careful, baby.” Worry clouds the part of his face not hidden by bandages. I know it all rests on my shoulders since he’s in no condition to fight like this.

I simply nod as the sound of a key jingling in the lock reaches my ears. Adrenaline courses through me as I scan the room, spotting a large knife on the other side of Max’s bed. Hurrying over, I snatch it by the handle, pressing the cold metal blade behind my body as I take my place beside Max’s bed.

William bursts through the door, his chest heaving, eyes bulging out of his face. He stares at us, a vile sneer curling his lips up. “I see you found your boyfriend.” His hand gestures to Max, but I notice the shakiness. Whether it’s from his rage or what I stuck inside his veins, I don’t know.

The empty syringe still hangs out of the side of his neck, causing my eyes to widen in disbelief.

He didn’t even bother pulling it out.

William notices my stare and grabs it, yanking it out of his neck and tossing it onto the floor. “You planning on sticking that knife you’re hiding behind your back inside me, next? You’ve already stabbed me in the heart with your deception. Why not keep going, Irelynn?” A flash of hurt goes through his eyes, piercing my heart as he heads toward me, his face twisted from pain. “Why not fucking kill me?”

A loud gasp leaves me, his words hurting me in spite of all he’s done.

Wrath swirls inside his light blue irises with all the fury of a tornado about to rain down pure destruction. “How fucking dare you? After everything I’ve done for you.” His shiny shoes move across the floor, his movements deliberate, as he stalks closer to Max and me.
