Dr. Clarke raises his brows. “Not for a few days, Max. You were shot twice and narrowly escaped a warehouse explosion. You need to heal.”

Zoning out as the doctor talks, I only tune back in when he discusses my rehabilitation. Heaving out a sigh of frustration, I stare at the ceiling.

I just want the fuck out of here so I can find Irelynn.

Chapter ten

Max

October9,2018,4:00p.m.

Jack and Rosalyn sit at my bedside, dark circles beneath their eyes. Rosalyn dabs at her eyes with a tissue from time to time while Jack fidgets in the chair, unable to sit still.

Darin and Vanessa left to get a bite to eat, promising to return soon. I think they just wanted to give me some privacy with Irelynn’s parents after we dropped the bombshell on them about the shooting and the warehouse explosion.

We didn’t tell them of Damian’s intention to assault Irelynn. And it kills me to think she’s possibly being assaulted by William… and Damian.

I need the fuck out of this hospital. I don’t care what it takes, I just need to find and rescue Irelynn.

“I’m so sorry, Max.” Rosalyn squeezes my hand, her voice intruding on my thoughts. “It kills me that you are suffering like this.”

Squeezing her hand, exhaustion overwhelms me, even though I’ve done nothing but lie in bed. “Thanks, Rosalyn.”

Jack leans forward, patting my forearm gently. “You are one helluva brave man, son. Going into that warehouse alone…” His voice trails off.

I release a humorless laugh. “Darin doesn’t think so. He thinks I’m completely irrational.”

“Because you got hurt, Max.” He leans forward in his chair, his stare intent on me. “If you would have found and rescued Irelynn, he’d be hailing you a hero.”

Jack always knows what to say to make me feel better. I was really worried he’d be pissed at me for running off on my own. Instead, he was sympathetic. He said if Rosalyn was missing and he thought there was a chance in hell that she was being held in that warehouse and his best friend wanted to wait until the next morning to check it out, he would have done the same thing I did. Of course, Rosalyn was in the restroom when he told me that. Otherwise, he probably wouldn’t have said anything.

“Darin informed me you saw Gregory Anderson while you were in Heritage Hills. Sounds like it didn’t go well.”

Jack’s nostrils flare, his face turning red. “No, it did not. Gregory was not at all helpful. He didn’t offer to do a damn thing.” His arms sweep out as his voice gets louder. “I asked him to talk to William and outright ask if he kidnapped our daughter. That fucking assholelaughedat me.”

“Language, Jack,” Rosalynn hisses.

He runs a hand through his brown hair and I swear I see more gray in it than before. A pang goes through my chest, feeling terrible for the suffering they are enduring with their only child and daughter being abducted.

His lips flatten as he throws a sideways glance at Rosalyn, then returns his attention to me, irritation all over his face. “I asked him if he’d consider tailing William and he threw us out of his home, saying we have no right to throw around false accusations about his son.” His teeth and fists clench as he shakes his head. “Stupid bastard.”

This time Rosalyn says nothing, although she looks irritated as hell. Though whether it’s from Jack’s profanity, Gregory’s lack of support and assistance, or both, I’m not sure.

My jaw clenches as I stare at the ceiling, releasing a heavy sigh of frustration. There are no clues as to where William may be holding Irelynn, nor are we getting any help from his father. Hopelessness descends on me, my stare vacant. I’m fucking useless, lying in this damn bed, injured.

“Max, don’t give up hope. We will find her.” Rosalyn’s soft voice is beside me and my gaze slowly moves to her, wondering how long she’s been standing there.

Jack is on the other side of my bed, patting my hand. “She’s right, son. We’ll find her.”

I sure as fuck hope so. The sooner, the better.

Chapter eleven

Max

October9,2018,8:30p.m.

Jack and Rosalyn left my room around seven-thirty to head to the hotel room they rented for the week. I’m grateful they stopped by, but both are painful reminders of Irelynn and my failure to find her.
