Just one simple word, but I see and feel everything she’s feeling.

As certain as I am of my feelings for her, I see them reflected back at me like a mirror.

“I love you.” I mouth the words to her, unable to keep them inside for one second longer.

Tears fall from her eyes as she mouths, “I love you.”

Winking at her, I mouth, “I’m coming to get you.”

She nods and points to the right. “William is in his bedroom.”

I wish I had some idea of the layout of the house. Spotting a door, I move toward it when Irelynn holds up a hand. Freezing in place, I watch her turn away from the window.

My eyes narrow as I spot an older lady coming closer to her. Irelynn turns her back to me, clearly having an exchange of words with the woman. Then she turns back to the window.

“Don’t move. Just wait until you hear the door unlock,” she mouths the words slowly, waiting for my nod, indicating I understand.

Then she disappears from the window.

My ears strain and I finally hear a couple of beeps, then the door unlocks.

Moving silently toward the door, my fingers grasp the handle, turning it slowly. It opens and a dim light in the room provides just enough illumination for me to see.

Quietly shutting the door behind me, my eyes are peeled, searching the room.

As I start forward, I see the shadow of a figure approaching, so I glue myself against the dark shadows of the wall, my gun poised and ready.

The light footsteps hurry in my direction. A smile breaks across my face as I lower the gun, recognizing the sound of her steps as she hurries into the room, her eyes scanning it.

With two quick steps, I hurry from the shadows, my lips pressing against hers before she can utter a sound. My arms tug her against me, holding her so tightly I’m probably hurting her, but Ican’t find the strength to let her go. Not even the slightest bit, because I’m holding my entire world right now.

Tears flow down my cheeks, mixing with hers, as our mouths move together frantically. Her hands wind behind my neck as my lips bruise hers, so desperate to kiss her again that I can’t be gentle.

She matches my ferocity, as though she’s dreamed of this day, and worried it would never come. And now that it has, she’s making damn sure I know exactly how much she’s been missing and longing for me.

Finally, I pull away, knowing I can’t afford to get totally lost in her. “Does William know?”

She shrugs. “I’m not sure. I suspect he does, but—”

Hearing a noise behind, I whirl around to find William standing behind me, his gun pointing at my face.

“He sure fucking does, asshole. You think you can break into my house without me knowing?” His furious blue eyes move to Irelynn, full of betrayal. “I knew I couldn’t trust you. After everything—”

But I don’t give him a chance to get anything else out. I pull the gun up, shooting at him, then push against Irelynn, trying to prevent us from being hit by any stray bullets as he pulls the trigger.

He hits the ground first, and I pull the trigger again, but Irelynn knocks against my arm.

“Please don’t kill him,” she pleads. She turns her head to someone behind us. “Emma, call 9-1-1.”

Before I can react, she’s crawling toward William.

“Irelynn, what the fuck are you doing?” I whisper, my gun trained on him. “Get out of the way.”

“I’m sorry, Max. But I have to make sure he isn’t dead.”

My brows furrow as I stare at him, looking for any sign of movement. But there isn’t any.

Irelynn squats beside him, her hands feeling for a pulse as her ear goes over his mouth, checking to see if he’s breathing.
