“Never,” she promises, her chocolate eyes shimmering with her promise. “I love you, Maxwell Hugh Devlin.” Her hands cup my cheeks. “I can’t wait to marry you.”

“I can’t wait to marry you.” Pulling her even closer, I whisper, “I promise to do my best to always make you happy, beautiful. I’ll protect you with my life.”

She smiles at me, conviction shining in her eyes. “I know you will, Max. No doubts whatsoever.”

As much as I want to kiss her and lose myself in her, I have to keep my senses about me. I’ve just gotten her back.

Pulling back enough to flick off the safety, I discreetly put the gun in the waistband of my pants.

My gaze flicks to William, who they have loaded on a stretcher. His eyes are open and he blinks, clearly disoriented. He meets my gaze head on, emotion flickering in his eyes.

Irelynn sees the expression on my face and turns, pressing her backside against me as she stares at William. My hands slide around her waist.

The medics lift William and as he reaches us, he holds up a hand, grimacing from his pain.

His gaze is on Irelynn. “Thank you. I know you saved me.” His eyes flicker to mine, then back to hers. “He would have killed me, otherwise.”

She nods and I hear her say, “Thank you for saving me. But let them help you, okay?”

His eyes soften and he nods, then his eyes slide to mine. “Sorry about everything, man.” His head lowers and I see regret there.

I want to hate him, especially for capturing her and taking her away from me.

But I can’t. Not after hearing Irelynn thank him for saving her. Although I’m not sure what she means, I don’t see Damian around, so I’m assuming she’s referring to him.

I simply nod at William. “I’m not sure what happened, but obviously you saved my girl. So thank you.”

He nods, and they carry him away.

The guy who was kneeling beside William nods at us, then runs after him.

Emma comes over to Irelynn, and she pulls away from me, wrapping her arms around her.

When they separate, Emma wipes her eyes, then clears her throat. “I see you are back where you belong.” Her eyes move from Irelynn’s to mine, warmth flowing through them.

Irelynn looks over her shoulder at me. “Yes, I’m back where I belong, for sure.”

Our hands reach for each other, our fingers interlocking.

I raise her hand to my lips, kissing the back of it, my gaze locked with hers. Irelynn releases a long sigh of pleasure.

“I know we haven’t been properly introduced. I’m Emma.” She gives me a smile. “I’ve heard a lot about you. All good things, of course.”

Her gaze slides to Irelynn’s, then back to mine.

She lets out a long sigh. “I’m embarrassed to have been a part of any of this, though I loved getting to know Miss Irelynn.” She gives us both soft smiles, then looks past us, gesturing. “I need to leave. Bryan is taking me to the hospital to be with William.”

Her eyes are full of sadness as she looks back at me, then at Irelynn. “I’m sorry about what he did. William has been a confused man for a long time. Hopefully, he will listen to Miss Irelynn’s advice and get the help he needs.”

Irelynn reaches for her hand, grabbing and squeezing it. “I have faith. And you’ll be there to set him straight.”

“Damn right.” She grins and we all laugh. “Good night, kids.”

Releasing Irelynn’s hand after one final squeeze, she steps around us.

As she passes me, she squeezes my arm. “Take good care of Miss Irelynn.”

Though I don’t know this woman, I can see how much she cares about my girl. “I promise, I will.” I clear my throat. “I’m sure we can find a way for you to see Irelynn.”
