And like true soul mates, we say the words we should have said to one another a long time ago, our voices dancing on the breeze in perfect unison. “I love you.”

Using the pads of my thumbs, I wipe her tears away, memorizing every detail of her face. “God, beautiful, I’ve fucking missed you. And I’m never, ever, letting you go.”

The moonlight above us glints in her eyes as she says, “Good. Because I fucking missed the hell outta you—”

I can’t wait any longer to kiss her, feeling as though I’m going to die if I don’t feel her soft, pillowy lips against my own. The electricity flows between us. The tingles that only she can make me feel float along my spine and every single nerve in my body. My skin hums as though an electric bolt just struck me, making my blood run faster. Sparks ignite inside my body, crackling like a flame, as her apple cinnamon aroma fills my nose, mixing with the crisp night air.

Our lips move together, the sensation dizzying, as though I’m floating in the clouds, my feet not touching the ground. She lightly gasps into my mouth and I swallow it, breathing her in. My hand comes up, touching her velvety skin.

I turn her head, deepening the angle of our kiss. Her hands fist my sweatshirt, tugging me closer, and as I moan into her mouth, she swallows it. My heartbeat thunders in my ears, mixing with the sound of the crickets that serenade us with their beautiful, happy tune.

Slowly ending the kiss, I pull back, staring into the face of the woman I plan to look at every single day for the rest of my life. Cupping her face in my hands, my voice is low as I stare into her chocolate eyes, the window to her soul. “Irelynn Rose. I fucking love you with every damn broken piece of me. You fuse the fractured pieces of my heart together, mending it.” Gently grabbing her hand, I place it over my heart. “You are my home. My entire universe. And I love you so goddamn much.” My eyes shimmer with unshed tears, my voice breaking. “Let’s go home.”

She nods, speechless, as I gently wrap her hand in mine. Our gazes are locked together as we move toward Darin’s Jeep.

I finally break eye contact when we reach the passenger side and my hands go around her waist, gently lifting her inside.

Leaning over, she hugs Darin as I climb into the passenger side. When she pulls back, my arms wrap around her, pulling her onto my lap.

She settles against me, her arm around my neck. “I hope I didn’t hurt you outside.”

Chuckling, I say, “I don’t give two shits if you did, my love. I’m just so fucking glad to have you back.”

“Me too.” Her voice comes out as a gentle sigh.

“Hang on, guys.” Darin’s voice breaks through our moment. “I’m going to turn around on this narrow road. I don’t want to get any closer to that haunted house if I can help it.”

I hug Irelynn tightly, my gaze alert as Darin begins turning us around. Once we start down the windy road, I breathe a small sigh of relief.

“Glad to have you back, Irelynn.” Darin looks over with a smile, his eyes moving from her to me. “You’ve made my boy insanely happy.”

She lifts her head, meeting my gaze. “He makes me insanely happy. I’m so fucking glad to be back here with him.”

Emotions overwhelm me and I hug her again, whispering against her hair. “I’m never letting you go. I promise.”

Darin’s phone rings and we all start laughing.

“Five bucks says it’s Vanessa,” Irelynn says with a giggle.

“Of course it is.” Darin grins, putting her on speaker. Before he even gets out a hello, her voice cuts through the line.

“Please tell me you have my best friend.” Her voice is full of desperation and fear, mingled with hope.

“I’m right here, in Max’s arms,” Irelynn says, smiling at me.

Vanessa sobs. “Thank fucking God.” She sniffs loudly. “I’m on my way back. Where are you guys heading?”

I glance at Irelynn, then at Darin. “How about Darin’s house for now? I want to hire additional security tomorrow before I take her back to my place.”

“Okay. That’s where I’ll head.” We hear her chair scrape the floor.

“See you there, best bitch forever,” Irelynn says, her voice cracking as tears flow down her face.

Vanessa can barely speak. “Back at you,” she finally chokes out.

Darin takes her off speakerphone, talking to her, but I’ve already tuned him out. Opening his center console, I grab some napkins, gently wiping the tears from her cheeks.

“I love you, Max.” Her voice quivers, her eyes shining with emotion.
