“I love you, beautiful. So fucking much.” My hands push her hair from her face, my lips melting with hers.

We lose ourselves in our kiss, forgetting anything exists except us, and this moment.

“Aw fuck, they’re sucking face again.” Darin’s voice causes us to slowly break apart, laughing. He shakes his head as he glances from us to the road. “I have a feeling this is going to be a long drive home.”

Kissing her cheek, I mutter against her skin, “Just ignore that asshole. I do.”

“Awe,lover boy, am I making you angry again?” He gives me a teasing smile, then looks at Irelynn. “Max and I were gay tonight in the hospital.”

Irelynn howls with laughter.

I growl, my brows furrowing. “Wewere not gay.Youmay be, but I am most certainlynot.”

Finally getting herself under control, Irelynn says, “Why were you pretending to be gay?” She looks at me, confusion in her tone.

“Some nurse was hitting on him.” Darin shrugs like it’s no big deal.

Irelynn’s spine stiffens and her shoulders straighten as she turns her face from Darin to mine. I don’t even give her a chance to say a word, grabbing her by the back of her neck, my lips capturing hers. In an instant, the tension eases from her muscles as her lips move with mine, losing herself in my kiss.

“Oh fuck. Not this again.” Darin’s voice interrupts our moment once more.

We are both laughing as we pull apart, our lips still inches from one another. “You have nothing to worry about, beautiful. I’m yours. Completely devoted to you.”

An enormous smile pulls her lips up as she presses her forehead against mine, her warm breaths flowing over my skin. “I know. I’m not sure why I get so jealous.”

“I understand. I get that way whenever someone looks at you. Even though I know you’re mine.”

She nods. “It’s because we care so much about one another.”

“We do, baby.”

As Darin drives, I bask in her as she sits on my lap, happiness and contentment lighting up my body.

Finally, a rational thought breaks through my glow, bursting our perfect just the two of us bubble. “Babe, we should call your parents. They are staying in a hotel in town.”

She slowly pulls back, her eyes filling with tears. “Yes, we should. I’m guessing we should call them from my phone?”

I nod. “They’ve been communicating with me that way, so yes, we better.”

She leans against me as I dial her dad, putting it on speakerphone. She tilts her head, looking up at me as it rings. I nod, understanding what she’s asking without her saying a word.

“Hi Max. Rosalyn and I were just informed you were released from the hospital tonight. That’s great news.”

There’s a slight pause, and then Irelynn says, “Hi Daddy.”

He sucks in an audible breath. “Kitten?”

A smile spreads across her lips as her eyes brim with tears. “It’s me, Daddy. Max and Darin rescued me.”

I laugh and say, “I don’t know about that. Your daughter escaped and was running down the road when we arrived.” Giving her a slight squeeze, I lean into her ear. “You are a badass, babe.”

Her face glows from my compliment as she leans over, kissing my cheek.

“I’m so glad you are with them, princess. Where are you guys heading?” Jack sniffs, his voice cracking.

“To Darin’s house.” Irelynn shakes slightly, overwrought by hearing her dad crying, and I squeeze her tightly.

“Hold on, kitten. Your mom just got out of the shower.” We can hear him hurrying through the room, then his low voice, before Rosalyn screams into the phone.
